Someone on another list posted their picture of their Ferret Nation cage, so I thought I post it here, too: linda

Is that a boar with an angel on the left?? Oh my, those hammocks are coooooool. I gotta get some. How do you make those?? I guess that answers Moshev's question about the suitability of a ferret cage! SUITABLE! And thanks for posting it.

dude, what are you ON??! ehehe I think it's a woman ("watery bint" comes inappropriately to mind) with an elephant whose ears we can't see!! You can buy hammocks online, or you can make your own. Some poeple just pin the corners of a piece of fabric to the cage. If you did that you'd want to perhaps fold over/double up the corners to give them extra strength. I've made my own by cutting fleece to the size I want, and hammering grommets into the corners, and I use shower hooks to suspend them. There is even a quick-n-easy way to simply ties the corners that never seemed entirely secure to me. I've even read that people will use dowels or bird perches, sew a fabric into a tube and just thread the tube over the dowels and position them in place. OH! I just foudn this site, which I'm sure will help!! www.rattycorner.com/funstuff/hammocks.shtmllinda

Here's a pic of Chopin in his old cage, in a hammock I made. I cute the top piece a bit smaller, then lined up the corners of both pieces and put a grommet through.

Ohhh! An elephant - with ears and trunk hidden! ;D So why is she hanging with a 'phant? What's a grommet? (I don't do Shop!). ;D Thanks for the site. At least I did something useful today - I found a really heavy duty clean wide mailing tube, sawed it into bits with a hacksaw, and gave the ratties some tubes to play with.

I don't know, but *I* would if I could! Well I call them eyelets, but everyone talking about hammocks called them grommets, so I figured I'd go with that They are 2 rings, basically, that fit inside on another (think eyelets on boots, etc). You squeeze or hammer them into each other to make a metal-reinforced hole in fabric. I prefer to use them rather than just a hole jammed in in order to make it stronger and less likely for the pin/hook to tear the fabric under the rattie(s) weight. Here's pic from a website that shows the grommet/eyelet style hammock: dearpiehammocks.com/Hammocks/Triangle.jpgThey actually have some nice stuff there for a decent price. L. linda

Thanks again. >> You squeeze or hammer them into each other to make a metal-reinforced hole in fabric << Ah ha! Wasn't there a movie, "Wallace and Grommet"?? The only class I ever was kicked out of was Shop. In Sixth grade! I'd rather hang with a giraffe, actually!

I was reading a comment about this cage on another forum. The poster pointed out something I hadn't thought of:
"As for the Ferret Nation, I love it.. but the doors scare me to death. I am scared to death I'll close a tail, head, foot, etc. in it and hurt someone. I'd rather deal with a smaller door than do that."
Something to keep on the alert for!

I have my rats in a rabbit cage (the guys) and a GP cage (the girls). They have big doors, and I am always careful. But thanks for reminding us.
