I finally got the boys into the new cage today. It's a "Petcetera" chincilla cage (Petcetera is the big chain of pet stores here). I bought used it from one of the local rat breeders.
Because Hugh's stitches hadn't really dissolved, when he went for his follow-up the vet pulled most (and I think he got a tiny piece out that was still sticking out). It healed up really nicely, but at some point later on he scratched himself near the op site, but he didn't do anything to the incision itself.
I waited till that had healed up a bit more because I didn't want it to attract Locutus's attention, and thereby make him notice the op site.
So, today was the big day, the re-introduction and the new cage!
They were too busy checking out the cage to pay much notice to each other. However, they seemed happy to see each other! The spent alot of time checking out the bottom level for the most part.
I used a couple of corner litter pans and hung them to act as extra shelves to avoid too big a drop from the middle shelf down to the left of the cage. I've added some fleece in there, so they will serve as nests, too.
In the photo I hadn't added the igloos yet. The oblong one went under the lowest shelf, and the larger, round igloo to the left, to fill in the gap between the 2 hanging litter pans. I'll also be adding the toys and buying a couple more. They've never had the wheel before, so we'll see if they take to it
My nerves were on edge watching Locutus climb to the top of the cage in spots I didn't think he'd try! He never went to that side of the cage to climb in the old cage, but hopefully he was just investigating and didn't find anything interesting, and won't repeat it again! I think I will buy a couple more of those litter pans and hang them in the higher corners in case he tries that again!! I've also got some "Leap-n-Lounge" shelves on order -- the small wooden shelves that screw to the sides of the cage.
The boys started to show more interest in each other and got into some grooming and rough-housing. They just got into a pretty scappy fight just now!! I'm not happy to see that --I've never seen them go at it like that before, so I hope it's just all the new stuff that has them on edge a bit, and maybe after they've had a snooze they will be ok!! Gosh, my heart's in my throat! They didn't scream or anything and they seem to be ok -- no sign of blood! :/
I also tried to video them, too, when they started exploring more, but it's awfully dark:
