I figured I would throw this out there for everyone on the board. I know my dog loves them, but so do my hamsters. I feel when I'm not home the sit around and argue; Daisy says "They are puppy treats"; Cookie and Hung Hung in retort "No they are hammie treats". In any case you get the idea. I don't have gerbs so I don't know if this would be appropriate for them. Scotty Biscuits You need: 1 cup oatmeal (not instant) 1 cup rye flour (wheat cana be used) 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon melted butter 1/2 cup of milk You do: Combine oatmeal, 3/4 of the flour, sugar, and butter together. Slowly add the milk til a firm but slightly sticky dough forms. Scrape put dough onto wooden board or counter top. Knead in the rest of the flour til the dough stiffens (this can take up to five min or so). Wrap in saran wrap and place in the fridge for one hour (or 15 min in the freezer). Preheat oven to 350F. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut into shapes. Place on lightlygreased cookie sheet (I use my baking stone). Bake for 15 minutes. Turn off the ovenand let biscuits coolin oven with the door closed. Store in an airtight container. Flutter

It sounds like a nice idea, but I'd be reluctant to give any of my furries [rats, ham, gerbs] anything with sugar, butter or milk in [especially as they are lactose intolerant]

I think that all of that stuff is in regular bicuits anyway... plus all the treats we give...such as yogurt drops.
a little won't hurt them when i get the time i'll have to try this.
thanks brandy

dosergirl: perhaps but I don't give my gerbs regular biscuits or yoghurt drops I know what it's like to be lactose intolerant, even though it mightn't be life threatening, it sure as hell is uncomfortable and not very nice

I wasn't sayin' that you had to feed them to your small and furries, I just put the recipe on because I know how much mine love the biscuits. Cognac

Sorry DF, I think toaster oven is as simple as I could get. Cognac Actually, I do have a toaster oven sitting on top of the microwave. I haven't used it in years, though. Maybe I should. It is not the cooking I hate; it is the cleaning up!

I know, I wasn't offended I was just trying to inform people that rodents are lactose intolerant

What about substituting cat milk? Most cats have a low tolerance for lactose as well but the substitute seems to keep them happy. Maybe it would work in the recipe.

Oh yeah low lactose milk for cats is ok, but you can buy cheaper low lactose milk from supermarkets which is pretty much the same thing Soya milk is good too, and they absolutely love it. Soya cream [it's like imitation single cream] is good for putting weight on underweight furries

I'm sure all of those would work as substitutes. The biscuits that those of us buy from the store for our little furries (big furries, or both) have milk. I can honestly say none of my critters have ever gotten sick. To see what other stuff is in those store bought treats do a search on google.com, for dog food cat food and rendering plants. I bet you would be surprised at what you find out. Cognac
