Okay as you all may remember me saying that when Chewie yawned I saw that he had a curled tooth. So we went into the vet's office today and she saw us just a half an hour ago. Results: Chewie broke his two lower teeth and only has one tooth up top. His curled tooth was cut and it was long, at least two centimeters. I'm told to watch to call back in two months for a checkup. He can't eat hard food, so we're going to buy baby food tomorrow. And we can warm up his food and mash it, we also made mashed string beans and carrots for him. So far he likes that. Is there any other kind of soft food that Chewie can have? Right now he's sleeping and I really hope he gets better. The vet was good with him and visa versa. Also since Chewie can't have anything hard, I'm giving away his chew blocks and a treat called NutriPhase fruit and veggie treat. If anyone would like them, I'll mail them over. I'd hate to waste them. My poor baby.

So let me see if I understand. Chewie has two broken teeth on the bottom and only one tooth on top. Which was the curled tooth? Does he really have only one on top, or will the missing one grow in to give him two? 2 cm??? Really?? I can't imagine it being more than 1 cm! It must have been REALLY curled! Pinky had a long tooth once that kept him from closing his mouth properly. It grew long as he aged and stopped chewing as much. Why it happened only on one side, I don't know. You should hold onto your food. Chewie won't be on a soft diet forever, will he? Some food suggestions: cooked egg, oatmeal, cooked veggies, soft fruit, yogurt. You can also take his hard food, break it up if it's in a block form, and add water to make it soggy and thus soft to eat. That way he'll still get his basic nutritional needs met. Fuzz recommends cooked yam (do it up in the microwave just like a baked potato)! One of his favorites! ;D Wonder why poor Chewie ended up in such poor oral health at such a young age??

Thank you two and Fuzz for the suggestions, I will use them as I go to ShopRite tomorrow. Robin--maybe it was one centimeter, but it seemed long! His curled tooth was on the top. So I'm guessing the one she cut was his only tooth up top. She said that there was only one she could see up top, but he may grow another one to make it two up top. No, this is just stage one for Chewie. We'll gradually move up for him. Oh, I'm keeping his food, we're softening it up for him. I just giving away his chew toys and a treat b/c I have a feeling he won't be needing them. I have no idea how he ended up like this. I'm guessing before Carrie got him, he was treated badly. Or not given enough oral care to him. None of my hamsters have ever had this. Thanks hamwolf89--at least though he'll be moving up gradually. I hope he likes the baby food, I have a feeling he will since he loved the string beans.

Mail them? You want my address? ;D Elderly gerbls are often fed soft food including ground up nuts. They all have back molars of course so as long as it is small enough for them it is no problem. Of course a scrambled egg with melted cheese is a big favorite, as is warmed baby food (chicken and veggies). Maybe now you should rename him "Gummy"?

No, lol, his name is staying Chewie! ;D So they're allowed to have chicken? What kind of cheese are you and hamwolf saying he can have? Thanks for the other suggestions! Well, I was going to throw them away and then my Mom said, "Well why don't you give them away to one of your hamster friends." So that's why I put that. I trust all of you on here, if you noticed I didn't put that up on another forum. So if you guys want them, just tell me and I'll send them over. There's one treat and eight chew toys.

So all cheese, thanks. I can't give him chicken right now cause the vet said no meat, but once he's out of stage 1, I'll give it to him thanks.

I just put a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the almost cooked eggs, and then one more minute in the microwave and it is melted.
I don't do it often though.
I never heard of tjem not being allowed chicken. COOKED chicken is advisable for all of us to avoid bacterial contamination and e coli bacteria.

Well Chewie isn't allowed to have chicken b/c it will be hard for him to eat it. I even have to chop up carrots for him and the eggs I gave him were also sized down. So chicken is out of the question right now and the vet said so.

Grind it up and mix it with water. Or use baby food which is pureed!

Tom, you're not getting it! I can't!!, vets orders. I won't go against a vet right now. Until she says the "go ahead" I will.

So it is not the chewing of the chicken, but the chicken itself that is the vet's concern. Why is that?

She said no meat right now as he can't chew on it. He's having a hard time chewing on soft noodle peices that I give him. She just said no meat, we didn't question her on it.
