I forget if I asked this question here or not, but since I can't remember I'll ask again. Maybe it was on another forum that I asked it.
But does hamster food have experation dates on them? I can't seem to find one on the bag I have now and I don't want to give Chewie any stale food. I only feed him the very little round food, that's all he can have since he barely has any teeth.
So do they have experation dates or not? Thanks.

The only bag I can find around here is LM hamster food. It has what I think all of them do - a code number. You would have to go to the company's site and ask them about it. Obviously, if you know your pet store, you will well be aware how fast their stock moves and how fresh it is. I do, and it moves fast.
I don't think any pet food has a month/year expiration date, but I am not sure.
BTw, the only vacuum packed food is by Hagen, and it should always stay fresh.

Okay so no expiration date, thanks.
I think PetsMart moves fairly quickly with their supplies cause I was talking with a young woman and she said that the type of hamster food I buy (the name leaves me yet again) goes very quickly.

Go to a pet store and check the bags of various brands. I doubt if you will find an expiration date, but if you do tell us.
Stale food usually will be the result of someone leaving it around THEIR home, not from the store.

Well I don't feed it to Chewie everyday. I do it when I think he needs it. But I'm trying to find some other types of food for him so he can have more nuetrients in his body. It's kind of hard to smash up hard food. Any ideas for the little guy?

I do scrambled eggs sometimes. Really?...brocolli?
Huh, good thing I like them too! Thanks.

Mine always eat it, dwarfs too.
They also eat tofu to my surprise. Try it.

Oh, yeah--tofu and broccoli for sure! All my hams have loved them both. Maybe try some cooked yam too. That's another Chinese hamster favorite. Pasta, rice, a little melon or grape. . . and scrambled eggs, as DF mentioned. Fuzz also really enjoys this German Dark Wheat bread I buy. I put a small piece of it down and he grabs it in a flash and runs off with it!

I got some Sun Seed food today and it had an expiration DATE on it - almost two years from now!

Well if I see it becoming stale (don't know how I will), but I'll throw it out.
Hey guys, I just thought of something. With both of your ideas for the nutrition for Chewie, he'll have a great feast with us on Thanksgiving! Peas, String beans, yams, his hamster food (some baby food too), maybe some cheese and eggs in the morning. He'll be wondering if it's his b-day that day. ;D
Don't worry, I won't give all of that to him in one day.

What I wish I could fiind on T-Day is a green bean casserole, with cheese. My mom always made that as part of the dinner, but I can't even find it frozen in stores.

Might this be incentive to cook, DF? INGREDIENTS: 4 cups cooked green beans 1/4 teaspoon salt dash cayenne pepper 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided 2 tablespoons butter, cut in small pieces 1/3 cup heavy cream PREPARATION: Put beans in shallow buttered baking dish. Sprinkle with salt, cayenne pepper, and 1/2 cup of the shredded cheese; dot with half of the butter then pour cream over all. Stir to blend ingredients. Sprinkle remaining cheese over green beans and dot with remaining butter. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes, or until hot and bubbly. Cheesy green beans recipe serves 6.

Thanks, but my gas stove was turned off years ago. If it can't fit in a microwave or toaster oven I can't use it.
The gas stove required $20 a month even if I never used it. I just stopped paying bills. No point.
I can't even cook green beans as I can't boil anything without a stove.

I've never seen an expiration date myself but I would recommend leaving all opened and unopened bags in the fridge and just leaving a little bit in a small air tight bag to use everyday. Don't put the seed mix in a too large a container though because oxygen will take nutrients away from the food.
If you're looking for something else to feed him because of his teeth problem, you can soak a lab block in soy milk or KMR and mash it up a little bit. When you give him scrambled egg you can mix in some wheat germ and finely minced chicken. Both of these are nutritional for your little guy.
