On Saturday, the 9th of December, I spend five hours at a pet store where they were having animal adoptions arranged by the North Shore Animal League and Brooklyn Animal Foster Network. Both are easily found on the Web if interested.
It was a cold day, there was another pet adoption going on nearby, and owing to the the Holiday season people I guess were busy. So all the interest we had, and we had a lot, was from people who already had lots of pets. But three dogs were adopted; sadly, te four cats from NYC's Animal Care and Control were not adopted, and the store refused to keep them for awhile even though I volunteered to care for them or even take one home for a few days. But it couldn't be worked out.
Two kittens, privately owned, were adopted out, and all that resultd in was a bucket of tears from the owner who as upset at parting with them, but she could not keep them due to her other cats' conditions. The kittens were trapped in a back yard--both females were all black and adorable; all the cats were, including those you see here who are back with the ACC and might be euthanized at any time. The one with the orangey eyes is the one I almost took home for just two or three days (she could have been confined in the bathroom). But as the volunteer was unable to be around by mid-week I might have had to keep her for who knows how long, and keeping the cat a prisoner in the bathroom had its limitations. But it might be better than the ACC. If I had it to do again I would have taken her, Audrey was her name.
A very melancholy experience for me, the whole deal.
(Later, I had Audrey brought over, and she is staying with me for good!).
