I had that concern with a recently deceased rattie He was on meds for quite a while. Most of the time he would take them (syringed) when mixed with Vanilla Ensure. However, nothing could disquise the HORRIBLE flavour (yes, I even tested a tiny drop -- it only seemed fair) of the antibiotic. I had to wrestle with him alot of the time, but it usually went down (or most of it did -- sometimes he would turn around and smear it all over me!) I've heard that rats can keep something in their mouth for quite a while without swallowing, so one has too keep an eye on the meds. Sometimes I would catch him doing it, and I would try everything to get him to swallow but sometimes he won. He looked so silly...I'd hold him up to get a better look as his mouth, and it would be all puffed up with meds just sort of sitting inside his parted lips! I would try stroking him vigourously, or rub under his chin but sometime he just wouldn't budge. Sometimes syringing it quickly helps, because they feel they must swallow or else choke, but as you say, Fledermaus, there is always a possibility of choking/drowning. Not to mention you really don't want that stuff getting into their lungs -- like Baytril, which I understand can burn one's skin. Trying a variety of foods to see which can disguise it and will be tolerated is the only thing I can suggest. However, my late Lennier wouldn't even eat the strawberry-flavoured (so-called) antibiotic in strawberry yogurt. When my other rat, Chopin, was on meds, he would eat them only in certain foods. Linda

What did you do with Lennier?
I will try different foods. I will never do more than drop medicine into their mouths, carefully.

What did you do with Lennier? To get him to cooperate? See previous post. Just kept at it, hoping he would get enough in him. Most of the time he did, but sometimes he would dig in his heels. Linda
