I know a crazy lady who rescues cats, she lives way out in the country/bush with 15-20 cats. She allows them outside and one of them has FIV. I couldn't get it into her thick scull how bad it was to have a contagious cat living with other cats, fighting with other cats, and then going outside to infect other cats I am in the process of rescuing cats. I know people who work with the mayor's office in NYC rescuing cats, or trapping, spay/neutering, and releasing feral cats. That lady HORDES cats in an irresponsible manner.

I don't think removal is an option, I've never heard of such thing, so I'm guessing we need it to function. My Vet told me today that Whizz was the only dog that day having an ultra sounds that was NOT diagnosed with cancer or an abscess. So we were very lucky. She will start her enzymes probably this weekend. >> I'm guessing we need it to function. << Maybe I was thinking of the spleen? I am too tired and busy to research the pancreas right now.

Pancreas--essential, as far as I know. Spleen--removal sets one up for immune problems, but it is not essential.

All in the Family: "Edith reading the latest in the heath series about body organs: "I am Mary's Uterus". Archie: "What does a musical instrument have to do with Mary?". >> Q. I am a 40 years old diabetic patient with chronic pancreatitis. The doctors are suggesting removal of the pancreas. What would be the consequences of this removal? Is the surgery complicated, where it is done and what would be the approximate cost? A. I do not know the indications for removal of pancreas in your case. Removal of pancreas (pancreatectomy) is indicated for disabling pain, which interferes with the patient’s ability to work, and is refractory to pancreatic enzyme therapy, painkillers, or nerve blocks. Pancreatectomy for chronic pancreatitis is complex major surgery and is performed by surgical gastroenterologists in major tertiary care hospitals. << LINK

The pancreas secretes more than just insulin, so I think this person would have their share of digestive issues too along with diabetes.

Readers Digest used to have a series of article about body parts, such as "I am Mary's liver". And then it told you about the liver. Archie, see above, did not know what a "uterus" was! A pet had a pancreas problem. We were wondering if removal is feasible. Seems like only a last resort even for people! But at least you would not have to worry about pancreatic cancer.
