Today was General, and President, Grant's Birthday. Simply put, if not for him the North surely would have lost the Civil War. As usual I was at the annual ceremonies at Grant's Tomb on his birthday. It had been raining, so ceremonies were indoors, and that made for photography problems as flash was needed but it could problematic getting close enough for it to be effective. The usual reenactors, Army color guard, and West Point cadets (USMA) were there along with the new wreaths. But the speeches were quite good especially the one by one of the luminaries -- Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne who came up from DC after the Press Club dinner/affair last night which Bush attended. Kempthorne is a former mayor of Boise, governor of Idaho, and U.S. senator from Idaho: www.doi.gov/welcome.htmlA great great grandson of Grant, Ulysses Grant Dietz, was there as usual. The commandant of cadets at West Point, brig. general Robert Caslen, also spoke. Both the USMAs and honor guard were duly impressed by the Secretary: perhaps they knew his background, but everyone was enthralled by his speech. So they gave him close attention - especially with Caslen near by! www.grantstomb.org/ind-gma.htmlwww.nps.gov/gegrI will attach some photos later. Been busy. After the ceremonies I walked three miles south through lovely Riverside Park with the Hudson River on my right.
