Seriously... what the heck is this thing? Front View Back View So I'm driving home and i see this 'thing' on the side of my street near the little canal we have. I stop my car, and back it up, the animal doesn't even notice. I try to take a picture with my cell phone of the 'mini looking beaver thing' but it doesn't turn out, so i drive home and get the camera. I walk back to the area, and there he is eating away. I am maybe 4 feet away and still it's just sits there happy eating while I take some pictures. I was there for almost 5 minutes standing and watching this guy eat dandelion leaves, finally he starts to smell the air and decides to leave. Cute beaver face, long rat tail but furred, the size of a chinchilla but longer. Seems to be a nocturnal guy with minimal eye site and a herbivore. Anyone know who he is? Ryan said he'd seen him before and it seems to live at the canal.

He looks like a full grown beaver to me. He has that type of head and he's near water. The tail is throwing me a bit cause it's skinny looking and not like a beaver, but maybe it's the angle?

Nope, it's not a beaver. Beavers are big, and they have a flat long and round tail.

Yeah, I've seen a few of those before on the mainland. (Oh right, you're on the mainland, duh) I haven't seen them on the island, but I've seen lots of otters and a few beavers.

Ooh they are sooo pretty! Here in the netherlands we call them Waterrat We had a family of those animals in the 'ditch' at the back of our house, I could watch them for hours. They are very busy, and when the babies come out of there underwater/ground-nest it's beautiful to see the whole family swim together.

Way too small to be a beaver and the tail is all wrong. Never seen a water vole anywhere in my life before. How does he compare to the regular vole (see separate thread with photo)? When I was at the American Indian Pow Wow (see separate thread) they had all those raptors, and the big eagle owl. The guy was explaining what each one was, and then I pointed to his hunting dog and said "and that's a dog". He glanced at me like I was nuts, but then got the joke and laughed and said "you know your animals!". I will post a photo of the dog soon for you to name the breed.

Hey, wait a minute. You just answered your OWN question! I didn't even get a chance! And to think I gave you an 'exalt' for that photo!

Are you sure? The head looks different from your photo to your wiki photo. Or maybe that's because yours is an adult and the wiki picture is a baby one.

Well, it's not an otter, it's not a beaver, it most definitely is not a platypus. It could be a water vole or maybe a muskrat? Do we even have muskrats?

We're thinking it may be a muskrat now b/c of size. Hard to tell, they both are kinda cute.

Hasn't he made admiral yet? He always reminded me of Teller of Penn and Teller.
