AT MY HOUSE! I was browsing CL and saw an ad that was giving away a free hamster complete with cage and supplies. They said that they were too busy for a hamster (with a new baby) and that's why they were giving it away. It was located in my town, and after an email last night and a phone call today, the poor thing found a home. The woman brought him by work tonight and he came home with me! I haven't had a chance to actually sex him, but they were told it's a he (not that it matters, as syrians are in separate cages anyways). I have two bags full of stuff to go through, as well as bedding to change tomorrow. (They have him on a mix of cedar and pine which I'm getting him off of ASAP). I don't know what his name is but I will probably stick with my theme (movie characters) and come up with one. I'll post pictures tomorrow after I go through all of his stuff and change his bedding. He's (I think, I don't actually know correct colour names) a cinnamon banded long haired Syrian, I'm guessing a few month's old. (he's about the same size as Meeks) He has red eyes and is supposedly tame. I don't think the people who had him really knew what they were doing, as it looks like they went to a store and bought everything that said "hamster" on it. I've got a lot of work on his cage and going through his stuff to do tomorrow. Regardless, he's safe and sound now.

Very good job.
I have thought of doing that too, but my space limitations mean that I could do little. But if someone (Kate?) can take a peek at Craigslist for NYC now and then, well, maybe there will be one rescue I could do, rodent or bird. Remember, many of mine are getting older, and some have recently died. Right now I have eight tanks (or more?) with only one critter in them, and they are not young. But if I looked, I might want to get too many; or get sad if I could not help. Make sense?

Yeah, that makes perfect sense, DF. Thankfully I'm from a small community. There are a lot of dogs for sale on there, but a free hamster? How could I pass it up? Now I have a bunch of stuff to donate to the SPCA (they had rabbit food in the bags as well as hamster stuff). I switched his bedding over, put cardboard on the top shelf (because it was just wire) and made him as comfortable as possible. He's got a nice wheel, one of those mesh ones. Oh, and yes, he is fairly tame, at least enough to let me hold him and confirm that he's a he!

Way to go, dezzi! You have to give these people credit, though, for trying to rehome their pet rather than neglecting him or dumping him somewhere. I just posted something on craigslist yesterday for the first time in ages, and I looked at the list of prohibited items. You're allowed to advertise to rehome a pet with a small adoption fee, but you can't sell animals. So that's what this family did. I'm very happy for you! And I'll say it again: you have a big heart!

Aww, thank you. The little guy was apparently originally named Tinkerbell, but then they were told he was a boy, so they changed it to Tinker. I don't think that fits him very much, and it's too close to Tucker, so my boy is in need of a name. I've been trying to think of characters from movies that I like that have red eyes...

>>Ishbal. They all have red eyes.<< I don't know what that is... Ok, so taking pictures today wasn't happening because my camera died on me, but I did manage to get one of the new goofball in his cage. (he's the little bundle in the left corner) I haven't got him anything to nest in yet. The cage does have a regular bottom, I just put the whole thing in cardboard because he makes a mess. The top of the cage and the ladder is wire, but I duct taped cardboard to it so it's not so hard on his feet. This is the setup they had him in, except he was on pine/cedar and had one of those hay nest things. I was going to leave the nest in and then was looking at the wire openings in it, and they were rusted, so I chucked it out.

Speaking of cedar, I once was given a small Coast Cage with TWO Syrians in it whom I named Malu and Cocoa. They lived normal lives ans are now in the memorial gallery in my sig. The people who left them at the pet store had them on pure cedar! It smelled like a cloths closet. Your cage looks good!

The cage looks fine with space and neat in general. How are those cages for hamsters, Dez? I was thinking about getting one whenever. And how is your little one doing? Decide on a name yet?

I see that smilie and I think you're joking around, but it's flying over my head. It's a dog silly....like a Greyhound type.

Katie, your avatar is fortune city...
The cages are okay, the top shelf and ladder are wire so I had to cardboard them up. The shelf is a pain to clean because it's tricky to get it on and off, but once you have the hang of it, it's not a problem. The bars aren't as close together as my other cages, so if you have one of those little water bottles, it will slide sideways and fall off. (you can see how even the big one slides sideways) I really like the access from the top and bottom shelves and he seems to like it.
He's doing good. Still settling into his new surroundings but tons better than he was. He's decided he likes Carefresh and the little pile is now a huge mound he's burrowed in. It's really cute. I did a full inspection of him yesterday; he looks to be in good health. As far as names go, I have some ideas but I'm not set on one yet.

Huh, thanks you two. I wonder why I saw a dog but you didn't. Changing now..do you see a dog? That's good that your little guy likes his two-story home!
