Peanut butter, as soon as the food dish it placed in cage dumps it over. And flings the dish around, funny to watch since it is a pretty heavy ceramic one.

There was a thread, maybe over at S&F?, about how people fed their rodents - with or without bowls. Sounds like PB at least would have been part of the without a bowl crowd! ;D

I never heard of that place - even though I started that thread. Won't be starting any more. With my gerbil girls it is pointless to have a bowl as they always cover it over with hunks of cardboard and bedding.

I know the girls find the food but I can not keep from thinking to myself are they getting enough? Not at all like feeding my birds or dog. You know exactly how much they've had. come to think of it when I had my rabbit he'd dump over his food, but he was a very silly rabbit. He'd push aside my Rottweiller and Chow to eat their food.

Gerbils are pretty clever. If they're hungry they'll eat. They won't let themselves starve. Any excess food they'll likely move to a spot they've decided is safe. When you clean the tank you'll probably find a large amount of food that they've tucked out of site.

I'm glad to hear that they are getting along.
Mine don't box much, but I have one guy, appropriately named Pan, who seems to be a little too interested in humping his tankmate Pyke. Pyke squeaks and runs away from him, but there are never any fights. Otherwise, they get along really well.

I have 12. I haven't seen any of them box in over a year nor hump for almost as long. When I take one out for a long period of time, say ten minutes, to let them climb on me (I love letting Sam climb on my bare back!), when they get put back there is some sniffing and maybe a little wrestling, but that is it.
The worry I have with the girls, who cover their food with cardboard bits, is they really seem interested in eating when I uncover that food and scatter iut a little, as if they had not eaten for a long time.
