(edited to add: oops I mentioned this before, around 3 years ago, in this thread,
kanez.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthissuesforall&action=display&thread=2095
but this new post is a bit more detailed):
I haven't done this in a long time.
I had arranged with a couple of vets over the years, to allow me to pay money toward my "account"/file so that when/if I needed a good chunk 'o change for a pet's treatment, it wouldn't be such a hardship. They were both able to set it up, and totally open to the idea. Every month I paid what I could (at the time I think I was aiming for around $25) and it does add up!
I trusted both vets completely to not do anything shady, and although I can't remember if I did it at the time, if you should decide to do something like this, getting a receipt and running balance each time is a good idea. I think I was mailing in a cheque/check so at least I had the cancelled ones being returned each month from the bank.
I had started out with 6 cats and my old 2 dogs, and of course those numbers have shifted around what with pets getting old and dying, new ones coming in....it had been suggested to me that I should get pet insurance. No way can an average person afford insurance for every pet! I didn't want to "hedge my pets" and choose one at random (don't know why, but didn't).
By giving payment directly to your vet, it doesn't matter which of your pets needs it, and unlike insurance, it's "hard cash" and not bound by conditions of an insurance policy. The money you have accumulated with the vet WILL go entirely (if you choose) to whatever you want (treatment, meds, food, etc).
I would just let it sit there when I had the funds handy to pay, and if it were a more expsensive bill, I had it covered in full or part, by the money on the account.
Just a thought.
