I am trying to knit some rat toys/blankets/cozies for a craft swap. Any recommendations?

For rats?
Take a look at the Habitats forum and the new big rat cage. There is lots of stuff in there that might give you ideas. Cozys are always good, of course. Hammocks, too. I am not sure about toys; I guess stuff they can run in and through and hide in if they wish. I was thinking about the best kind of toys for rats and that is what I came up with. Others here likely have better ideas, such as "adoptaratcanada".

I'm just not sure how safe *knits* are. Couldn't little toes or feet get caught up in it? I don't have experience with it, as I stick to non-knits like fleece.

Well, I am going out to get the girls a couple of bras. They make great hammocks!

knitted things are verrrry dangerous for rats.... a friend of mine almost lost 1 of her girls some weeks ago because she got stuck in a knitted thing with her head..she almost couldn't breathe anymore en her neck was very swollen I make my own hammocks, have a lot of fun doing that. I made these for the boys, a few weeks ago: Same things for the girls, only in different colors:

Then what can I make? I can only knit. I don't sew. How about just plain knit pouches with the owner's supervision?

Two rat experts here are wary of some knitted items. So, I would take their advice and consider some tightly knitted ropey like things to climb on. Anything where they cannot stick their heads in.

OK. That give me an idea of making very thick i-cords and braid them tightly together. Will that work?

Somethings strictly supervised like a pouch sound reasonable. I might be inclined to make it non-stretchy, too, though, as DF suggested.
What about rat themes people toys, like stuffed animals, scarves, etc?

Yep. But I never saw Ivory in the other cup simultaneously with Ebony. Of course they are both long gone. The really funny thing was that when I posted that on the RMCA forums two years ago I guess they assumed I was a female, and many members there started discussing and giving their bra sizes - which I did not expect! ;D I am often assumed to be a female. When Jessica the GP died recently - see Memorial forum - I posted it on guinealynx.com and people kept telling me I am "a great piggie mommy". It's sweet, though. I moved the three girls to a big cage yesterday and they are settling in. Soon the mat floor and the bras, et al!

It seems fairly universal that rodent parents are female -- which is kind of surprising especially where rats are concerned: most uninformed people think rats are a freaky pet to have, and expect that the parent will be a Grunge teen boy ;D At the first rat show I went to, there was around 1% males, and I think they may have just been husbands or sons of the rat mom, in tow for the afternoon.

I remember a photo I have somewhere of several score people at an AGS convention in Nashua, NH (the center of the gerbil universe it seems! Many members are there). It would take forever to find it, but I would say almost 90% were female, and the most veteran members and judges were 95% female. If I find it later I will slap it up. One would think this would be a good way to meet women! But they are all too dispersed to make such feasible. Maybe there is a rodent club in NYC. Need to check! All this also applies to rabbits and cats in large part. There are some males into these creatures, but a distinct minority. OK, the issue now is, how do some women get into and love rats while others think the idea is crazy and repulsive? (other than "education" and "being smart"! ).
