I finally found a true "gerbils only" mix, not some "hamster/gerbil" mix (which is really a hamster mix), or LM's Vita Vittles "gerbil mix" which is actually their hamster mix in a different package.  This Sun Seed stuff is only for gerbils, and it looks pretty good. No kernel corn which they never eat. It will save me time having a true gerbil mix. Before anyone says "too many sunflower seeds!!", there are not that many in a couple of tablespoons (maybe about 5), and seeds are healthy with good fats and only become a problem if eaten in excess. Protein content is 12%, and fat 6.5%.   |

My gerbils eat kernel corn...
Anyways, right now for food, I buy something called Sun Crunch, and I take out the sunflowerseeds and I add things like cherrioes, bran flakes, and other stuff that I'll randomly find. They seem to like it a lot. And as for the new gerbil food, I wish I could find that here, but I can't because I live in Quebec and they aren't allowed to advertise things without a french instruction or label.

Gotta have the French, huh? Funny, mine never touch kernel corn. And the real, "gerbils only" mixes have either none or very little of it. BTW, LM's "gerbil" mix is IDENTICAL to their hamster mix! They changed the forumla three years ago I guess to save money. BTW. I liked Quebec when I went on vacation up there, all the way up to St Bonaventure island where I saw the gannets nesting!  |

I once went with the NY Rangers hockey team's fan club to Montreal. Very clean nice place. Quebec City was very antique.
We went to the great French fortress on the coast of Lousibourg, famous in the 18th century. But there was so much fog I could barely see it!

Montreal is where I would be going to school, and I've heard nothing but good things about it! If I do make it into the program and decide to move, I'll have to check out some of the heritage sites! After all, I'm 1/4 French Canadian  About the gerbil mix, it's true, all I usually see around here is "hamster/gerbil" mix. So my question is what do gerbils tend to eat more of, and what types of seeds are more abundant in a gerbil mix? (I've never owned a gerbil!) |

They will go for the sunflower seeds right off. There are sometimes too many in Kayte gerbils only. Sun Seed Vita gerbils only has lots of dried veggies things - they look like green mini-discs. The hamster version has orange discs (carrots?).
I wish LM Bounty Buffet came without the kernel corn. It at least has good variety.
I think I recall Rasputin posted somewhere his ate kernel corn. (?).

As did Toysy, above. Interesting about the variations in the diet between hamsters and gerbils. I use Hagen "Gourmet" Hamster/Gerbil Mix. It's got more variety than the regular Hagen mix, such as some dried fruits and veggies, banana chips etc., although a little more expensive. I also use a lab block type food (there are some blocks in the mix as well), that is labeled "Hamsters" and not "Hamster/Gerbil." My hamsters seem to like both the blocks and the variety mix. I try to make the lab blocks their "main course" (they get more of) and the mix their "side dish." Just a regular hamster dining room around here!  |

Hagen. I sometimes get that and mix it in with the rest. Cute is how it comes in a flat squished vacuum pack!
Your ham eats lab blocks even with mix around??

Yes I have one of those flat squished vacuum packs in the closet right now awaiting its opening. About the lab blocks, Napoleon Pear LOVES them. I think its because that's what he was eating in the pet store. Of course, he'll eat the seed too, but he never refuses the blocks. Jenna doesn't like the blocks quite as much, but she still eats them. In fact, she seems to eat less than NP all together. She stashes it all, but doesn't consume her food as quickly as he does. Could this be because she's older? (By about 10 months) |

What brand lab blocks? I usually can find only LM or Kaytee. . . for mice anr rats. Although some pet stores give them that, and I saw one eating it.

I'm using Hagen, "Living World" Extrusion Complete Food for Hamsters. It comes in a yellow and green bag, with the Living World cartoon hamster on the front. They seem to like it.

LOL. << Like a sausage? >> I'm not really sure why they call it Extrusion. I'm guessing it's because it's got all the goodness of many types of hammie foods pressed into pellets? I was in one of our local pet stores today and they have that gerbil food you are talking about! Looked tasty |

Extrusion usually means squeezing something into a casing and then removing (in most instances) that casing. As with hot dogs.
