Since 2 days there's a new addition to my Hammie-family; His name is Charlie, named after Charlie Chaplin(you'll may remember I like to call my hamsters after famous people and I love black/white & silent movies) He's a black banded Syrian boy(maybe longhaired)..Here's the "strange" part; he's estimated to be only 19 days old right now! his mommy was a baby herself when she got him, and died 4 days ago(age +/-10 weeks). She was still in the pet store at the moment, and a girl noticed her. The same girl told the pet store-owner there was a dead hamster in one of the cages with a baby screaming next to her; the reaction of the owner?: oh, then we just have to kill the baby too So the girl saved little Charlie but couldn't take care of him, so I volunteered He's really a sweetheart, and a bit cheeky ;D He still needs "milk" so I give him a mixture of; low fat Quark, cream(30% fat), egg yolk, low fat milk and vitamins. He loves Vegetables(broccoli!) and already eats a bit of normal hamster food Despite his love of food he is really tiny; only 20 gr but he's growing; he was only 17 gr when he arrived this is him;

You can call his home Pickfair. I await Fatty! Fatty Arbuckle. I well know and love the Silent Era in films. Thank you for doing what you can for those in the pet store. I have two hams right now I rescued from one. Wow. He surely is not weaned. He will need extra warmth I think, and regular feedings every few hours? Waiting seven to eight hours between feedings (while you sleep) I doubt will be enough. I posted baby photos - Rainy's litter was in January 2003, before this board was founded. they were all black or "panda" color - like Charlie, so he reminds me of them. They are all now in my Memorial Gallery. Charlie got me thinking about them. And I do miss them:

@ DF: I need to feed him every 3 hours(he also drinks milk from a bowl, so sometimes I can wait 1 feeding-time) but that's not a problem because I have (Chronic) Insomnia and I don't sleep much Rainy's babies where beautiful, I can imagine you must miss them, as I miss Noortje a lot. Luckely I still have Lilli(Her daughter), but she celibrated her 2nd birthday in march so I don't know how long she'll be with me.

>> I have (Chronic) Insomnia << You are the perfect person to feed young hamsters. ;D I never had to do that as Rainy, who I got on a wind-swept rainy Jan. 3rd, 2003, was a surprise pregnancy and she stayed with the babies, all of whom I kept. Their names and stories are in the memorial gallery in my signature. I would put a shallow bowl of an omlette and cheese on one side of the tank while they were sleeping. In 20 seconds there was a stampede across the tank of little hamsters! I do miss them and remember each well, along with little events in their lives. I also had a few others. 14 separate big bins and habitats was quite a chore; that I miss less. Zeb lasted longest - 2 years and 4 months, just a little longer than his sister Ebony. He looked old and had "dandruff" when he passed (not uncommon in older hams), but she looked the same as when she was barely a year old.

thnx Katie! Charlie hasn't grown a lot over the last days, but he does look more "mature"; his eyes are clearer, he walks normal and his furr has grown. And his head isn't to big for his body anymore Today I weight him at 24 gr.
