Well, I've never had a huge fruit fly problem, but I have a funny little story to tell you: A few years ago, a friend of mine went away for a week and left an open, finished can of pineapple on her kitchen counter, with juice still in it. When she came home there were HUNDREDS of fruit flies in the apartment. It was awful. She called me over and we started going after them with rolled up newspapers. We killed many, but noticed that alot of them were landing on the rim of her red wine glass. Some had even fallen into the glass of wine and drowned. She says, "I hate them! Now they're in my wine!!" But I thought.. hmm.. they like the wine... So we just left the glass out and went back some time later. 40 flies were either on the rim or already floating in the wine! So, maybe just leaving out a little bowl of red wine might trap some. I also remember finding fruit flies in our white vinegar bottle (it had a little hole in the cap), so you could try this too. I've also noticed that a product called "Sticky Sticks" works quite well. Stick them in a plant or something and the flies land on it and die. Hope this helps

Maybe they get drunk and fall in. But maybe a lot successfully feed off the wine and fly away, albeit it in an inebriated state.
Usually this time of year the hangng fly strips go up. Ugly things. I sprayed my first regular fly tonight. The harbinger of thouands to come.

But I think that the ones on the rim of the glass have the ability to get away. I've noticed alot more bugs around lately too. Tis the season. The other day I must have had 4 wasps fly in here. I'm not a fan. Always happy when they finally decide to fly back out the window.

Fly strips. Ugh. I can't tell you how many times I forgot that they were there, walked into one, and lost some hair.

Last Summer was the worst for heat, humid - and bugs - I can ever recall. I will have to use insulation stripping whenever I open the windows even with screens in. Fly strips are horrid, but help. Heat them up for several seconds in a microwave and they open easier!

Can Gerbils get fleas as well as mites, just curious, I have heard of mites before so far I don't or my gerbils don't have any.

I suppose they can get fleas. But I have never had the experience nor heard of it. I would think fleas would want a much bigger host, and they'd be easy to find (and kill) on a gerbil.
