For those who recall earlier posts, a beloved neighborhood yellow lab, Jerry, had to be euthanized in December. Her owner/caregiver was distraught, and I spent many weeks trying to get her to consider another dog. I had gotten in touch with Long Island Labrador Retriever Rescue (LILRR) while Jerry was ill, and now they got her in touch with a lab who was heading to the pound. Charlie's human "dad" was having a bypass, and his human"mom" was on dialysis, and their adult son neither had the time nor facilities to deal with him. So here he is! Saved from the pound. Another rescue. This is a charming portrait in the Grandma Moses style of the late Jerry: JerryHere is Charlie resting: CharlieStanding CharlieHead ShotCharlie's gleaming eyes, and meWrestling Charlie to the ground! What happens when you let a lab pull you off your feet. (He saw a tree!). That is his caregiver, Mary. Not also the lump on her head! Black Eye - ouchCharlie is suffering from some separation anxiety; i.e., he barks a booming bark when left alone. But we will work on that.

He is a very lucky and beautiful dog! That was very nice of you to help her out. DF, you should know better than to beat up a nice lady like that

You should see the welts on my knuckles. At least the dog likes me. She actually must have been knocked almost cold when she hit the sidewalk. There is a huge lump on her temple, also. Oh yes, Charlie is no longer flatulent. If only all humans could claim as much. . . Poppy has been loose for hours. . . I'd better find her. And find the poop she must have left around. Oh. . . the POINT of all this is to RESCUE animals, and there are many such groups as LILRR. Keep them in mind.

What a beautiful dog!
And what a great thing you've done, DF, both for the dog and the neighbor.

Thanks.
She used to weigh 400 pounds before having a gastric bypass, and currently has ankles the size of my thighs - edema. On disability. Why she is not that steady on her feet and went over once on her face.
BTW, I just spent 20 minutes massaging Charlies belly. Labs love that. I think we both found it relaxing, although I am, again, way behind in my schedule and e-mails.

Charlie is a cute lab! How old is he? He's seven. I forget when his birthday is (mine was today!), but I will find out. He loves to have his stomach rubbed - I did that for twenty minutes today and he seemed to trance out! He is getting over his separation anxiety slowly: his new caregiver can now go to the store without him barking his head off.

Sad news. Mary, who adopted Charlie the lab, two nights ago was run over and killed while walking Charlie. He was OK. It was a dark rainy night. It has been raining for a week straight here in NYC. The wake was BEAUTIFUL with many tributes of and 'from" dogs, including a letter "written" by Raven her first lab. There was a life-size carnation "statue" of Charlie made I think from dyed carnations. He is with the sister. It was all lovely and showed real appreciation of her love of animals and especially dogs. The funeral mass is tomorrow morning. Yea. Life can really stink sometimes.
