I was recently in one of the pet stores I frequent and where I am well known and I was chatting about their critters' conditions. I found out "the spiny mice are not selling", not even at only $2.49 per mouse, reduced from 9.99. They were all together, 13 of them, in a bare ten gallon tank in the back of the store, and that is way too crowded for that many mice. No wheel, of course. I assume they are of different sexes, but I also assume of there were any babies they would not survive owing to the cramped conditions. So, they let me take them all for a HALF PRICE discount off the already rock bottom price. The entire colony is now in a tall 25-30 gallon tank (I am not sure of the size) on new bedding, with a big new wooden house, a suitable mesh wheel, and two long heavy cardboard tubes. It is very nice to see them happily exploring and playing just to my left here! I will add more interesting stuff soon, especially things that give some height as they love to climb and get up high. I feel good about this. I will check their genders in due course, but not now as I have no time (World Series on right now!) and no ready tank. well, I have a tank but no wheel and water bottle. So, for the mice, a new world for them - and a better life!

Glad the mice are in a kinder, gentler environment.
When you get a chance, compare and contrast regular mice and spiny mice, please, for those of us uninitiated to either.

I have posted photos in the past. Other photos are in my Memorial Gallery in my sig. Fancy mice can come in various lovely colors, and their photos are also in my Memorial Gallery.
Spiny mice are almost as big as gerbils with skinny hairless tails, pointier noises, they live years longer, have smaller litters, have longer gestation times, jump and climb better, and are considered more social and smarter. They also do not have typical fur as they have something that is more "spiny" so heat can be let out easier as they live in hot climates, such as Egypt. They drink less too.
