I posted here of Rangi's sudden death a few weeks ago. The condition did not seem contagious. Maybe it was; maybe it was something else. But his cagemate, Petey (black) and Max (blue) were found dead today. I looked Petey over last night; he seemed OK. Telly is fine. Very sad. As one member of RR once said, they are like furry flowers, so ephemeral. Fragile even. And short-lived under the best of circumstances. If you can't deal with this reality and console yourself knowing you made their short lives as best as you could, then get a parrot or a tortoise. They will outlive you. I would post pictures but I am still on this old laptop. I will order a replacement likely in a week. Photos of them surely can be found, in happier times, in the Rat forum. Telly is now in with a new fellow in a cleaned and disinfected cage. More on them later. I gave them both warm soapy baths first drying them carefully. The room is not especially cool. Word of advice. I do not want to give them too much stuff to hide in, like boxes. Better to keep a close eye on them, even if they are less happy with less stuff to hide under. The good news is, when the frigid weather in NYC warms a bit, two new rats will find themselves here. We do what we can.

Sorry to hear the sad news, DF.
Rest peacefully, Petey and Max.
The frigid weather has a firm grip on us for the forseeable future, so I guess those rats won't be coming to you too soon. . .

I can always carry bottles and have them put hot water in them, and seal them up in a zipped bag. I have done that more than once.
*sighs*
