As some of you know, Meeks hasn't been looking so good as of late. He had an appointment for Monday to see the vet as I thought he was close to his time. Sometimes we just have that instinct with our pets, don't we? This morning I got up to do the usual water-change and feeding of the rodents. Meeks was climbing the edge of his cage which I haven't seen him do since he was a youngster. I picked him up and was surprised at his snuggly-ness. He curled up in a ball on my chest and slept for about 20 minutes. Then when I handed him a sunflower seed he took it into his little paws, looked up at me, closed his eyes, and went cold. So RIP my baby, the only (and last) hamster I've ever purchased and the most evil little butt to everyone other than myself. I was so proud when I could finally pick you up without you trying to attack my hand. Have fun over the bridge with lots of broccoli stems, as those were your favourite. A picture from the back when he was healthy and an evil little monster. </3

So sorry. Yes, we have that instinct as you said, but sometime we are wrong- see my thread on Kahini in Rats. You did all you could and Meeks went knowing you cared and knowing he was safe. I always tear up at these threads. I mentioned elsewhere I lost a spiny mouse recently, but those guys were getting old. I get cheered up looking at the big 30 gal. tank of a dozen rescued spiny's. Look for the positive things you did, like getting him in the first place. Don't let the loss discourage future efforts. Hang in there.

What a special little guy. He passed peacefully and very happy, I am sure of it. Big hugs to you. I always try to think that our goal is to give as happy a life as they can have, although it's not nearly as long as we'd like (although 3 is quite old!), and doing that stores up some good karma for us and makes our corner of the universe a bit brighter. The feeling of loss, though, does not go away easily. When it does, I hope that you can feel good about the great life that you gave to Meeks.

What you describe, Dez, is a memorable and peaceful end to a long life for Meeks. He couldn't have asked for more than that--and he had a top-notch mommy who appreciated him despite his devilish ways.
Rest peacefully, Meeks. Hope you enjoyed that seed on the other side of the bridge. . .
And here's a hug for you, Dezzi--you are one resilient gal given all the critter changes that have been going on with you lately!

Dezzi...I'm so sorry for Meeks. The good thing is that he passed away in the company of someone he loves.

So sorry about Meeks, Dez, may he rest in peace. That was nice that he played with you and snuggled against you that day. So sorry again, *hugs*
