Wow. I missed a long thread over the past day or so! I posted elsewhere what I was doing!
Cats and rabbits get long. They do here.
>>She seemed really nervous that someone else was taking them (as she's had them for 5yrs and doesn't really want to give them up) but I told her I'd email her updates on them every once in awhile and she is more than welcome to come visit them if she wants.<<
Good sign she cares, and typical of a committed person. Nice response by you.
Get large amounts of hay, of course. Much cheaper.
I have never had to clip a rabbit's teeth! Feasible?? I am afraid of cracking.
I was reliably told to avoid water bottles. Not good for their teeth. If they have enough room they do NOT knock over a ceramic dog water dish.
Keep us posted, with photos. I want to dig out Asia and Becca today and say hello. . .

Yes, I have them already. The family was VERY happy I was taking them, the lady not so much. She was sad to see them go.
I'm rather impartial to the cage. Building an NIC one would be nice but my funds are lacking right now... got my hours cut down to 4 a week and I only make minimum wage, so I'm job hunting. I'm guessing the chloroplast or carpeting is for the floor of the levels and such so their feet don't get stuck in the wire?
Adam's (the bf's) question was why do they need to be in a cage at all when we could just put everything in the Xpen for them and then have a cardboard box in there for hiding purposes. The plastic part of the cage comes out so we could have that down with a blanket, their food, the water could hang off the side of the pen, and they have a litter box for in there and one for the rest of the run... would that even work? Because in my eyes the only difference is that there is no top on it. We were thinking we could even put the plastic cat carrier in there and have that as theirs so that when we need to take them to the vet we just put the metal front back onto it.
We could disassemble the cage they have now and keep it for emergency purposes...

>>The family was VERY happy I was taking them, the lady not so much. She was sad to see them go<< Why were they happy and she sad? I mean, I know why she was sad, but why were they happy? Why not cut down a doormat for the floor? I have. I suppose that is a point about the cage being superfluous and kept for emergencies. I have two - a shame any critter smaller than a degu can squeeze out. I could use chicken wire. . . Keep us posted, with photos. I happen to be home right now - coughing. Did too much these past weeks.

The family was happy because they were the ones responsible for the woman, and her buns, and her cats, and her house, etc etc etc. Seeing the buns go was one less thing for them to worry about, just from my observations.
Tried to take pictures with my cell phone as my camera is kaput but it's not texting them to my email like it usually does and I can't directly transfer them... ugh! Might get my photographer friend to come over and take some photos.

I would just use the X-Pen(s), and nto bother with an actual cage. The X-pens open and easy to clean. Adding a cover like a blanket/carpet etc to the floor will protect the floor from scratches and accidental spils. I bough rubber backed mats for like $15 art walmart BIG ones, as long as they don't chew it thee work great.
If you decide on a NIC set up let me know. I have NIC's and brackets for second level supports. Two of my pens are wood, and in each i use the NIC's as a condo in the back, i found bunnies love to climb up thigns and sit at the top levels.

So the boys are in an Xpen with litter boxes. I got some boxes from work (gotta love working for a huge retail business, free cardboard boxes of any shape/size you can think of). The ones I got are PS3 shipping boxes, they can fit 3 PS3's in them. So far the boys LOVE it! They're taking turns shredding it... thankfully I got a few boxes! I cut a door in the side of it because I read somewhere that they felt safer with a second exit? We found an old trampoline insert (the bright orange rubber part that you bounce on) and Adam's mom let us chop it up. It's now protecting the floor. No chewing yet, they've got blankets down as well that they chew up and rearrange... as well as their phone book and boxes.

I was going to mention phone books!
The only problem with them is getting replacements!

I was thinking of ripping up newspaper and filling a box with it, with some dry treats or something so they can dig through that and rip it up.

Don't THEY have the fun of ripping stuff up? I hear it a lot, and they love a condo floor covered in paper here.
