He really is.
Bruce is at LEAST a minimum of 5 years old, we know he is older, probably MUCH older. As a rescue theres no real way to tell his exact age.
Bruce has a blocked tear duct glad in one eye, nothing can be done about this b/c of his size. So we just keep him clean and give him drops if there shows to be infection.
Bruce also has a tumor of sorts in his head behind the other eye, it's not growing, but does put presure on his sinus cavity, and so he makes a lot of noise breathing.
Before X-mas I had taken Bruce to teh vet to be put to sleep, as he dropped so much weight and his son was bullying him. We decided instead to put him on antibiotics and let him live a solitary life... he flourished.
A couple months back his bottom teeth grew long and crooked, i didn't catch it soon enough The teeth were clipped, and he was fine.
Last week Ryan tells me over the phone he's feeding bruce, i said to him "wow that guy eats a lot" and ryans reply was "he's starving, fulling his pouches right up".
From that statemement a light should ahve gone off, but I was distracted at work and though to myself uh ok, silly guy they dont' have pouches.
next morning, is ee Bruce hanging out in his cage, i ahve a feeling and so go to see him closely, i see beddign stuck to his face, i try to catch him so i can get it off, and he's not wanting to be picked up. When i catch him I see that side of his face is swolle and the bedding is GLUE on there. So I call the Vet and the next day we go in.
How this Degu lives a happy care free life with all his health issues, i just don't know.
It wasn't good, there was puss leaking from the area when i brought him in. We went to shave it, as it took the top area off.... it exposed one huge deep girl thingy hole in the side of his face.
What he went through for us to clean it out and then look through all his teeth, poor old man. We had to give him big rests in between. Honestly, if he was to pass away from this i wouldn't be surprised, with his age and already so many other issues... that said he's home now eating/drinking running in his wheel and rearanging his house.
So, we 'think' this abscess started when he had the last issue with his bottom teeth overgrowing crooked. We think it make a little hole beside one of this top teeth, it healed over and abscessed, he's now lost that top tooth, and we're afraid may lose some of the top on the left side of his face.
Bruce's character never changed, he's never stopped eating and even put on more weight! If the side of MY face was one huge abscess you wouldn't see me doing any of those things (actually it was ocne and yeah i was misrable).
So we're on antibiotics, and since the site is open i can keep a good eye on it, and keep it clean.
Oh, I did take a (crappy) picture, but decided not to post it, as I find many people get icked out (Ryan won't even look at it), seems i can tolerate what other people see as disgusting.
Anyways, Bruce is amazing.
(PS. My vet now calls me Queen of Abcsesses, as I deal with a LOT lol)
