And to add on to what Andrea said about raised dishes helping, it also helps bigger dogs, like Great Danes (although theirs is raised even higher than Whizz's) so they won't get bloat. Bloat can kill a dog if surgery isn't taken right away.

Makes sense for bigger dogs. I am not sure if it matters for cats.

Dog with larger chest cavities, such as Boxers are prone to bloat. It is a very serious condition that can lead to a terribly painful death. I've seen it in a clinic I worked in, just awful. haha, i'd like to say it's to keep critters out of her dish, but apparently it doesn't work then

Bruce is one amazing dude! So glad he's made it through his many trials and can enjoy his favorite places. The photos are wonderful--love the Bruce/Whizz one and the last one you posted--he looks like such a character in that one! And he knows his name and follows you around? How cool is that? Andrea, I'm glad that special animals like Bruce and Whizz and Bo are in your life--the joy they bring is payback for all the work you do to help them and others.

Thanks Pinky I've been trying to find a popular degu forum, the one I used to use is no longer there Just a yahoogroup (i hate those). I am hoping to talk to more degu owners about ol Brucey. I'm cruious to know if other Degu owners allow their Degus free run of the house when they are home. I don'tn think i could with my group of boys, they are not nearly as hand tamed/bonded as Bruce is. Whizzed barked at Bruce last week when she wanted to eat and he was in her dish. It was funny. Now when she is being fussy about eating i tell her "If you don't eat your dinner, I'll let Bruce out to eat it for you" LOL... (If she doens't eat on her schedule, she can't have her shot, and well that'd b a bad thing). I do have to be very careful when opening a cupbord or the fridge, as sometimes Bruce is right in there likle a dirty shirt checking things out LOL OH AND.... i have been finding him hording dog food in his house, he takes once piece and runs it into his tank, then goes abck for more LOL

<<Bruce goes where he pleases? Potty trained?? >> Pretty much, just not down the stairs or into the 3 bedrooms (way to many hiding spots there). I can't leave the back door open in the kitchen unless the storm door is closed, and then that is where Bruce Sunbaths through the doors window. He LOVES the sun.
I guess he is potty trained, as he doesn't poop or pee anywhere but in his house. He is free to go in and out of it when I have the ramps up for him. I enevr potty trained him though, so that was all him LOL

No, that was a HUGE problem... but in their cages when i had other animals around them (gerbil cages). My boys would spray everything inside adn outside theri cage it was disgusting. Bruce no longer sprays since he's a single. My new cage with my 4 boys in it is designed so they can't really spray outside the cage. Insides another story LOL (Actually inside they just pee on everything, no real sparaying)

>>Bruce no longer sprays since he's a single.<< Ahhhh! Makes sense! Four guys marking their territory? Asserting dominance? No fights? Yea, I remembered hearing about the spraying. You know if spiny mice do that? Either they are, or they have very bad aim inside the tank!
