I have not been on for awhile did ya miss me? All my baby gerbils have grown up already I miss them being small they are so cute. They still are though, I wish I had gotten some pictures of them but I didn't. I don't have good lighting in my room so they would have came out anyway. I said that Nibbles couldn't detroy the half wheels right? well Wrong, she did . she chewed the plastic in the back of it, I wish they would put metal on them knowing how gerbils are lol so they were with out a wheel for a couple of weeks, then yesterday the babies started fighting so I had to remove their wheel and I gave it to Nibbles, well while I was putting the wheel in the tank all 3 of them jumped in it, I had to shoo them out of it and then they got underneath it so I had to get them out of there too, finally got it in and they all three got in it and tried to spin, it was too funny I tell you. well they each had a turn but couldn't wait to get back on it so they would jump on it while one was still in and tried to spin but couldn't so the one that got on while the first one was on pushed it out, this went on for hours. Now they are chewing the food dish, I am going to get ceramic bowls for them and see if they can chew up that. My gerbils seems so bored lol I want to put the babies in a tank but I am afraid they are still to small for that, they are already fighting it seems but I think it is a dominance thing more than anything else right now, they have to do that. I am watching them though, they are in my room too because of it. I am running out of food quicker now also. A large bag used to last a month now I am lucky to get 3 weeks out of it and the bedding too

I can just picture them all in one wheel, alot of my gerbils try the same thing LOL... too funny.
Do you have a Dollar store close by? I buy my rodent dishes from the dollar store, i buy tealight candle holders made of glass or ceramic, sometimes two for a dollar. They work GREAT and save so much money in the end. You don't 'have' to have dishes with gerbils, allot of people just sprinkle the food on the ground. I personally don't, i like to keep track and feed by whats in the bowl then overfeed/underfeed but that's just me.

Hi, and welcome back.
I keep mine busy with wood chews and heavy cardboard boxes and tubes (not paper towel rolls).

I have no idea what it's like to have chewing rodents--my Chinese are not chewers at all!

How do they keep their incisors from over-growing??

What I mean is that they don't chew everything in sight. Fuzz's teeth look fine; he chews on Tasty Twigs, the hard pieces in his Sun Seed Vita mix, sunflower seeds, and a mini-corncob. He has no interest in anything wooden or plastic. He totally ignores toilet paper tubes. The others were the same way. When Pinky got to be 3 or so and stopped chewing as much the incisors became a problem, and so he visited the vet every so often for a trim.

Sounds expensive.

A relatively small sum the first time ($25), and then after that I was told "just bring him in and we'll fit you in." If we were in there for his prostate, they did it for nothing. Nice vets there. The exotics vet called Pinky the calmest hamster she'd ever worked on.

My gerbils love the toilet paper rolls the babies when I first gave them one they crawled it slept in it, they didn't know what it was for but finally they chewed it up, I cut up all cardboard into pieces that I can find, the wood pieces they don't want it. Mine won't have a teeth problem for sure they chew everything especial Nibbles the little brat lol I can't keep anything in there without her chewing on it. I don't like to sprinkle out the food either I need to know what they have left and so forth. sometimes I find I over fed and sometimes underfed I feed every other day. Getting ready to split 4 loners soon, this time I am putting Giacomo and Uno together they were the aggressors is that a bad idea? then the ones who were the losers together mainly because one dove and 3 lilacs. I know who did the fighting so that leaves the others:)

>> am putting Giacomo and Uno together they were the aggressors <<
But not with each other, right?
I would say it likely makes no dfference; it depends on gerbil chemistry. I would not be surprised in the slightest if they both got along nicely. But watch.
I have a split screen to do ASAP. Cole, who almost died from mites, and a new golden agouti colored gerb who I need to name. Suggestions>

At the age of about 3.5 Pinky started bothering his penis a lot, and it was consistently out of the sheath. The vet suspected a prostate issue, and she gave him Baytril in case of infection and a hormone shot. Based on later developments I think it was the shot that worked. Meanwhile I had to keep pushing the ol' organ back in all the time, something he absolutely hated. He got back to normal, but not too long before he died it started again. I had to see a different vet who wasn't equipped to give a shot, and so he got just the Baytril, and that didn't work. And then I lost him at age 4. Lovely hamster. So mellow in old age.
What is the sex of your new gerb?

Weird. I have two separate gerbs of different genders, but the new one is a male. I should have said that. They (the guys) will be first to be intro'd.
