I finally took the chicken wire I bought a month ago and started cutting it and shaping, and tying it off, all over the big GP cage I have rats in. Yes, I got stuck and there was blood. But now the two young guys can go in there with the two bigger fellows, and they can NOT squeeze out! They are getting along well. Photos soon enough. . .

Lol, from the way you worded it I was a wee bit concerned that a rat had gotten caught in the chicken wire and was bleeding... the only thing I'd worry about is: would it snap and cut their mouth if they bit it? Chicken wire is kinda flimsy...

They seem fine in it as of an hour ago, and the two little guys (who cannot squeeze out) are hunkering down under their log things while Spot and Blaze run about.
I do not think they can get caught as with the wire and the bars they are not even trying to get out.
Can they bite through steel wire? Have not so far. Gerbils might try! I have seen them go through thick PVC pipe!

Well, these are not rabbits, and the rats do not even try to gnaw the wire. The big ones can't get out through the bars anyway, and the smaller younger ones do not try.
Pictures coming. Was busy. I had SO many photos from Spring I had to do, now in the Photo Gallery. Different albums there. Check them out.

I had to do the same with a sorta plastic rabbit/guinea pig cage, as i housed gerbils in it and they could climb through the bars.

It was an irritation and still is as my shirt and stuff snags on it.
BTW, in the Hamster forum from years ago I once had happen what Dez thought this thread was about - a critter getting caught. But that is not what this thread was about. But not with chicken wire. I will see if I can find it later. The ham was fine. (It might be in Photos).

I've had to do that to cages using hardware cloth. Gotta love how inventive we got for our critters.

Hrm, apparently it's also called "galvanized wire mesh"? It comes in sizes/thicknesses from a window screen to fencing. It's often used in construction to stop rats and mice from getting into pipes. Google's got a ton of articles on it and it's super cheap at the hardware store. I used the steel as the rats can't chew through it. (they tried)

I will ask about it in the hardware store. And check online, later.
