Long ago I asked about the inbreeding issue vis a vis Syrian hamsters and other animals. It is likely still up in the Hamsters forum from several years back. Find it with a forum Search. My concern was they all come from a very small sample in the 1930's. My experience is that they vary a lot, but few were difficult, and I have had many dozens.

I know that buying hammies from a pet store is a hot topic and honestly I really don't want to get into that, but every hammie I've ever had was from a pet store because I never knew of breeders until recently. This hammie is the only one I've ever had trouble with. I'm not sticking up for the pet stores but the wonderful hammies that are stuck there.

My hammie Radar does that legs up in a corner like Andreas hammie ,the problem is he lives in a cage. Get the mental picture? Ewwwww! And my Robos do pee in a tube at the bottom of their cage. Thanks for the tinkle talk gang.

Always look for rescue groups. Petfinder.com is a good resource. Rimu, the Syrian, sleeping (as usual) in a 20 gallon tank six feet away, was more of a rescue--the pet store sold a pregnant female, and I helped out two youngsters who were brought back. Totara died this Summer during the heat. See the Memorial forum from early July. I once got two pregnant female rats (so it turned out), Moet and Chandon, as they were champagne color, and I kept all the adorable babies. See the Rat forum for photos. They are all in the Memorial Gallery in my sig now.
