It happened again. Siblings in a trio from the same litter getting along fine for months in a 20 gallon tank ended badly. One gerb eventually started attacking another. I moved the beat up third gerb out. . . to soon be split screened with another. *sighs* Trios are inherently unstable and should be avoided whenever possible.
One a side note the slightly deformed and rescued female gerbil Enjo recently saw her third split-screened friend pass away. She is alone again, until the next split-screening, which will be soon. We hope for the best.

I know. It is an irritating and perplexing mystery. But clearly they are more prone to do that in a trio than in a pair or even a quartet.

Aww, what a bummer. I have a tank of 4 females (20G long) still doing very well (knock on wood). My 6 female gerbil tank lasted about 6 months before issues arrised. I now have 5 Female pups in a 20G, hopefully they get adopted soon though. I had a male 3-some do ok for a while, then de-clanning. You just never know. I also had a female who just kept losing partner after partner, she's on her third tank mate and so far so good Good luck with your split and a speedy recovery to your beat up gerbil.

Thanks.
You may recall my thread on RR "Tragic End to the Gang of Four". Search for it if you want in this forum from a few years ago.
I had four rleated gerbs since pups together doing fine. The dominant gerb, Tommy, a very smart guy, died of apparent natural causes. Within a few days his brothers, Dill and Phil, fought a terrible batlle (also up on RR) for dominance, Phil being mortally wounded and Dill being very badly mauled but surviving. Dill lived peacefully with cliffy until their natural deaths.
So if one of your four dies beware of tank chaos.
