This past week I have been so frustrated with my gerbils. Last week Cadillac was beating up Shelby, so i had to separate them, though she wasn't terribly beaten up I'm thinking she is sick (cancer?) as she doesn't look so healthy anymore and has lost weight. Friday i lost my snuggly man Jimmy, the first of my only litter I ever had (I had 5 pups, and they are 2.5 years old, now have 4 left ) Jimmy was murdered by his younger tank mate Last night i caught Carlo beating up poor Magic. Magic had some nasty bites all over him, a real bad one on his leg. I had to clean him up last night (blood all over me & him) and put him into the only tank i have left around 7 gallons. At least the smaller space will keep him less mobile so he can heal. I'm about to pull my hair out! Nothing has changed, why are my gerbils killing (and trying to) each other?!?!?! It's only my own too, the fosters are all fine, and many of them are in groups or 3 or 4 (females on top of that!). I never had these problems when I had 6 or 7 gerbils, and once my numbers start going down again, i don't plan on keeping more then that many again, the fighting and blood shed is just to stressful, i hate to see my critters hurt.

Oh man Andrea I'm so sorry. Did something in their environment change or could it be too many females are in heat? I hope they stop fighting.

Noting has changed, zip-zero. I don't even house the males and females beside one another, females are on a shelf one higher. I hope this is the end of all the fighting too

>> Jimmy was murdered by his younger tank mate << Please do not blame the younger tank mate. Please do not ascribe HUMAN activities and motives to gerbils or other animals; they do not act out of conscious malice. I admit to getting mad at a few, but it passed. The maddest I ever got was when Pearl the siamese playing in my hands suddenly bit through the wire of a forty dollar pair of headphones! (My fault). Sometimes fights occur owing to changes due to illness. Maybe strange new scents, some we can't even detect. Could be many things. I have had at least as many split screens fail as work. Right now I have three gerbils living alone--for safety. So be it. I even tried, upon introducing, rubbing noses into butts, as suggested on the AGS site. Andrea, I can post your problem on the AGS board if you wish. Just give me more specifics, perhaps sent as a PM.
