The first dog I ever loved was my grandmother's dog, a Sheltie/Collie mix named Poco. His name meant "small" in Italian although he was anything but small, he was always called "the lassie dog" by people who'd see him as we walked him. He was the most gentlest dog I ever knew and the most obedient. He would not only listen to his owner, grandmom, but us as well. He was always a good boy and when we would visit, anytime or Christmas Eve, after awhile my cousins and I would walk. I would take Poco with us. I know he loved me by the way he acted too. He loved to be petted and he died a couple of weeks ago. The vet put him down and it was his time; we know he was reunited with Grandmom as she went to Heaven years ago. I will always miss you Poco and I will always love you. You're free now, boy to run and play and be with your loving master. Give him a hug for me, Grandmom. I love you too. In case you're wondering what Poco looks like, picture a sheltie/collie mix or of you go to facebook, take a look at my avatar. Rest in peace Poco. You were the first dog I ever loved.

Sorry to hear of Poco passing on. But I know that he is a happy pup again being reunited with your grandma. And together they are watching over you. Rest in Peace Dear Poco. Love and hugs to you Katie.

Thank you Lyn. Yes, I feel the same where he's happy again being with my grandmother. When my aunt told him he'd be seeing her again, he wagged his tail.

Indeed so, being with your grandma.
What happened? How did he die?
Sorry. Post a photo, please.

I have to relearn how to put pictures up on the laptop, but if you go to my facebook page, you can see him as I made him my picture before the computer's tower went down.
He had multiple tumors throughout his body and he had trouble breathing my aunt told her vet and so when the vet looked she saw a tumor. She said it could burst at any time and he was so old surgery would not do. The vet thought it best if he be put down rather than the tumor popping and him suffocating.
The vet told my aunt to bring in Marley, her and my uncle's Irish Setter, so he could see Poco. That way Marley wouldn't go looking for Poco and understood that Poco wasn't there. I've heard this being done a few times and it works for pets. They understand that that animal is gone and they won't go looking for them.
That was the only reason I would ever go up to NY to see my aunt/uncle, because of Poco. They're okay people, but not the best. I always wanted Luke to meet Poco, but it's okay. I knew already they would've gotten along great!

Yes, they brought Marley into the vet room and immediately Marley sniffed Poco and walked away. She knew something wasn't right with Poco and has yet to look for him; I believe she knows her friend isn't here with her anymore.

I can relate to that Katie. When we had to put our old beagle Cody to sleep we did it at home. The vet wrapped Cody in a blanket and asked us to make sure our cat, Rhythm, said goodbye before taking him to get creamated. Sure enough Rhythm walked over to take one last look at his brother. He knew what was going on, plus our hesterical sobbing also let him know something was wrong. Animals are so smart and loving and deserve to say goodbye and make peace with their loved ones passing.
