This morning, the 14th day, the two remaining Mongolian gerbils opened their eyes! The nutmeg (Blake) has his eyes more opened than the black (Seth).

That is good. But how do you know she is a nutmeg? I had a golden pup who suddenly started changing color! I posted photos of her in another forum here. I did not know she was a nutmeg until the molt was well under way at 4-6 (?) weeks. Laurel:

Because if you go on the American Gerbil Association's Color Strip, it shows many different colors, obviously, and nutmegs are a lot like a DEH with dark tips when they're young. I have two nutmegs right now that have already changed. Very cool.

So how do you know they are nutmegs and not DEH's when young? What is the difference?
Yes, it was very cool to see Laurel change; at first I thought she was some sort of golden colorpoint!

DEH's have white bellies, and a nutmeg's will be a little darker. That's cute - it looks like she has a little wig.

Ah, the bellies!
Edan is a DEH with a lightening gene. It was hard to ID him at first. His nails are clear but the eyes are very dark. More on his soon in a separate thread, and the oher three in his tank.
Yea, Laurel looks cute. I really was perplexed at first. The odd thing was that she didn't slowly darken all over; she had that line between light and dark. All her photos are already up on this site; the Full Molt! ;D
