Well, in 2002 I bought a pair of Gerbils at PETCO. I was told that they were both Females, but I soon found out that the store was WRONG! Ok, so Flame and Jelly were doing good for around a week. They did normal Gerbil things. I brought them with me to our summer home in Maine for 6 weeks. They ran on their wheels, they explored their CT3. One day, I woke up, and ran downstairs to play with them. I lifted up the igloo that they slept in, and to my surprise, Oela! two baby gerbils! I was very excited. I sexed the 2 gerbils 3 weeks later, and made a GIANT girl cage and a GIANT boy cage I found that they were boys, so I put them and the father in one cage. The mom was alone until she had another HUGE litter! 16 babies! I gues I sexed them wrong, too, because I ended up with more than 60 gerbils in a corse of 2 months. The only place that I knew of that took gerbils was PETCO, but I wasnt ggiving my gerbils to them after I had read so many PETA animal cruelty reports. They all died over a 2 year corse, and I've never gotten a gerbil since. The end.

Wow. 16 babies is a lot! Pet stores do that all the time though. Once in awhile you'll find someone good. When Josh first brought home Rascal, he was cute, bit me-which it was my fault. And then something started to happen to Rascal, we called the pet store & they said to give him iceberg lettuce to cure his constepation. Well...guess what!? Rascal's name was soon turned to Harriet & she had seven. We gave away five to people we knew & kept two. The rest I think you all know. But anyway, there are good pet store people. When we had Benny & Theo sexed, the guy knew straight away they were both female. And he was right.

>> I gues I sexed them wrong, too, because I ended up with more than 60 gerbils in a corse of 2 months.<<
Is this a put-on thread? It is impossible to incorrectly sex gerbils as they males have obvious testicles, even if you can't determine the sex by the anal-urethra distance method. Even looking at them from the top I can see bulges at the base of the tail on males. In warm weather it becomes more obvious. If you don't know what you are doing put some in a critter carrier and take them to a vet or a pet store manager for sexing.

Obviously, by the "lol" at the end of that statement you are in fact joking around.

It was definitly NOT a put on!! I put in lol because now it seems funny. and yes 8 year olds are not always good at sexing gerbils.... XD And I used to think that the testicles were BUTTS. Wheich I found out last year that they werent.

I'd agree with DF on this one, especially since the largest recorded gerbil litter is 14, in the 80's. So either you made up a story, or are exaggerating, or you need to go call the world record company. And it is impossible to end up with 60 gerbils in 2 months, because the pups born from the first litter would first need to sexually mature, and then need 27 ish days for gestation.

It's true. And it's not definitly 16. ARound that. More than 12. And yes it is possible.

How exactly?
Lets say half the '12' babies are female, which is usually the case in typical even sexed gerbil litters, and these 6 females get pregant, along with their mum.
7 pregnant gerbils. To get pregnant they must first be at least 8 weeks old.
So 8 weeks old and they get pregnant. Gestation period averages at 24-27 days.
so thats 70 days old already. Not quite 2 months and not enough pups to add up to 60.
And it is quite rare for females to give birth in the 8-9 week period.
As for keeping them in a CT3, thats just cruel. They are too small for anything larger than a dwarf hamster and I still think I'd be hard pressed to force a dwarf to live in one.
I do hope you are fibbing.

which makes my point keeping gerbils in a crittertrail 3 is still cruel.
