He was the last of three brothers, and outlived them by months. 48 hours ago he was fine and normal, and ran up and down my arm. 24 hours ago, upon arriving back from the first day of the Dog Show, I found him lying dead. No symptoms; no tumors; nothing. Although with both brothers long dead this was not a total shock. He was a hooded black and white, but the back was all white, not black extending down from the head. He was a friendly guy, though not as friendly as his late brother, Greystoke. Burials in the Spring. Such is how it is with rodents.

Sorry to hear of your sudden and unexpected loss, Tom.
Rest peacefully, Jiggs.

He was joined Thursday by Guggenheim (a black hooded) - not his brother (as far as I know) but he had been with him a long time and had some eccentric mannerisms I found endearing. NOTE: both were old by rat standards, but I examined the others carefully a little while ago. . . and they had mites! The question then is, "did they get them from the newest young rat from the pet store?". I'll inquire there. I had the unpleasant chore of treating them with "8 in 1" spray and rubbing it in, and cleaning new habitats, temporary ones before I get to their big cages. I also need to get permethrin powder at a plant nursery today for the bedding (not too much!) - an old routine I have not needed to do in years. And that is why I am suspicious as to the source. I will add this to the General Health forum. But for now, RIP, Guggenheim. Burial in the cemetery in early Spring. I will look for another pet store that specializes in fancy rats, or maybe find a breeder. BTW, the new young one gave me quite a bite when being treated with the spray. First bite ever from a rat! lol

So sad that you lost another. May he rest peacefully too.
Our library here at MU used to be the Guggenheim "summer cottage" (ha!). It's no longer called the Guggenheim Library but rather the Monmouth U. Library, yet many folks still call it "the Guggenheim."

I lost another. See the new thread in General Rodent Health forum.
Have not had this happen in many years, a mite infestation. Grrrrr. . .
I need to get back to work before I doze off.
