Can you tell us about adding recessives like Red -Eye, "e" & "g" to start & how they can effect future Breeding plans etc..........Later I´ll pester you about Colorpoint Recessives and make you tell us all how each effects Coat & such.

Hope I´m on the right track, I´m no wiz at these little letters, I just know she has helped me from a start like this & we worked our way up some from there......I´m still climbing that Hill LOL!!!! Getting better though!!

I once said an argente was nothing more than a red eyed agouti.I was argued at that time that there was no such thing as a red eyed agouti.Okay when this is done you tell me.

As you may have noticed most dark-eyed(P*)gerbils have a red eyed counterpart.(pp)

Yeah I have heard of them.Some of them any more are not accurate.The one I used to use is gone.I haven't needed a gene predictor for more than 4 years I am a walking one.I memorized every gene there was in the first year I started raising gerbils. and what set of letters it took to make any color I wanted.Like I said each color has a set of genes particular to it's own color.

There are many amzing color varieties out there now a days. In fact, I recently did a presentaion for all the new members of the local gerbil club. It was very in depth so I made my presentation easy to understand and with VERY good pictures. personally though, I love Schimmels the best, not that i don't love the other colors

Knowing your genetics, will it be possible in the future to create as many color variations for dwarf hamsters and Spiny Mice as we have for gerbils, fancy mice, GPs, and Syrians? Obviously, the former animals have been pets for much less time. The number of variations for fancy mice must be hundreds when you take into effect different fur. And that reminds me, fancy mice have fur ranging from fuzzy to shiny silk. Are different types of fur possible for gerbils? I know dwarfs have somoe colors already, and Spiny's have slight differences.

So there are two questions for you.

BTW, it seems sapphire is a color showing up more of late.

Now a days, new colors for dwarf hamsters and spiny mice is no longer impossible. As long as an presciences breeder who knows the genetics on these animals can find a way, i wouldn't be surprised if in the near future we see new colors, etc.

I know a dwarf hamster breeder who is studying and breeding for different types of colors already!

I believe that the "satin" gerbil coat may be a new coat varierty. Apparently, this coat type is silkier then regular coats. its still being tested and bred for..........

So, i think that answers you questions. if i didn't i'll be happy to explain further

How long do you think it would take to get colors bred into Spiny Mice, with a gestation period of about 33 days and litters of 2-4? Years? Assuming anyone tries it. I don't even know if their spines can come in colors by way of mutations.

Dwarfs can be found in some colors, but much less than gerbils.

Rosettes. Not uncommon with GPs. I heard reliable accounts that some mice are getting them in Europe. I think I posted a French website that had some in the Mice forum. How about gerbils with rosettes, or long fur as Syrians have? Possible?
