They surely were cute, and some I miss greatly. Their deaths really hit me hard. (See the Memorial forum). The problems were that they cannot be litter box trained. Rabbits use a box naturally. Plus, GP poops are soft and squishy, unlike rabbit poops. This creates quite a mess in short order requiring loads of aspen or Carefresh bedding be changed, preferably every several days in Summer when bugs can get in there and breed. In Winter, you might let it go for almost a week. Rabbits require no bedding at all. Besides this, GPs overheat faster than I realized. In Summer, they must be kept in an air conditioned room if the temps go to 85 F or above. Like all rodents, they can go quickly, and if you "wait for symptoms" it will be too late. Space is an issue as they would need a big cage to run around in, and "out" time is needed. If one GP needs rescue or such, I might get another. But right now it is not a viable option, if there is a choice. But I miss their whistling and wheeking when they heard me, expecting greens. On the other hand, they could NOT stay in the bedroom as at night,m even in the dark, if they heard me roll over or such they'd wheek loudly! It did get annoying. If one GP needs rescue or such, I might get another. But right now it is not a viable option, if there is a choice.

I think you've made a sound decision based on facts and your circumstances. It's sad to exclude them, but you've given many of them good lives in the past. Enjoy the memories, and put your energy and $ into taking care of the critters who better fit your lifestyle. You will worry less and enjoy them more.
