Yeah. But in most likelihood we will see many abandoned rats left at shelters.

Disney was warned about "101 Dalmatians" before it came out. As far as I know they did absolutely nothing regarding stupid people getting - and abandoning - those dogs.

I meant what about the rats? People should be warned that they're not for everyone just like rabbits aren't for everyone. Just cause people see a cute and furry animal in a movie doesn't mean they have to go out and get one. That is why in my subject line I was hoping it wasn't another 101 Dal.

www.telus.com is a phone/internet company here who has very cool advertising with animals. Problem is people see the cute animals on the commercials and buy them. Last year we had a guy surrender his two rex rabbits to us. He acted like we were SO lucky to get these rabbits, as they were like the "Telus Bunnies" and he paid $30 each for them! He didn't donate the cage or money when he left them with us

A reminder to all - there is an Animal Rescue forum on this site.

Disney was warned about "101 Dalmatians" before it came out. As far as I know they did absolutely nothing regarding stupid people getting - and abandoning - those dogs. I remember reading that there was some advice about buying a Dalmatian responsibly that was included with the DVD . Or was this the deal with some other dog movie, not 101 Dalmatians? I can't remember.

<For 102 Dalmatians, Disney has made an effort to work with the Dalmatian Club of America. There is a short disclaimer in the film credits that explains that a Dalmatian may not be right for everyone and suggests contacting the DCA for more information. The official 102 Dalmatians website (www.102dalmatians.com) also includes a link to the DCA’s website (www.dca.org). However, nowhere on the site is it explained that the puppy Disney is using to promote the movie doesn’t actually exist. And, if it did exist, it wouldn’t have been to hear anything Cruella had to say.> Taken from pulsetc.com/beforejune/V4I34/coverstory.htmlAn interesting read. . .

It's a good link. This is part of it:
>> 1. Take the time to learn as much as possible about the Dalmatian before you buy or adopt. Members of the Dalmatian Club of America and affiliated rescue groups will be happy to supply you with information. 2. Try to attend a few dog shows. Dog shows are an excellent place to talk to breeders and to see good representations of the breed. 3. Always get a written contract from the breeder or rescue group that outlines the responsibilities of both parties. Be prepared to supply references and feel free to ask the breeder or rescue group for references. 4. Plan to take your new Dalmatian to the veterinarian for a thorough examination within two or three days of purchase/adoption. 5. Plan to attend training classes taught with positive reinforcement methods. Observe the classes before registering. Puppies can start classes as young as 10 or 12 weeks. 6. Spay or neuter your Dalmatian to prevent unwanted litters and to reduce the risk of certain behavioral and health problems. 7. Be sure to keep your dog safely confined in a fenced yard, in the house or on lead. Small children cannot be expected to be responsible for a dog out in public. Training classes will make control of your dog in public a lot easier. 8. Tattoo or microchip your Dalmatian for permanent identification. 9. Dalmatians want and need to be a part of the family. Include your Dalmatian in as many family activities as possible. Quality time spent with your Dalmatian will ensure a better relationship. <<

I like the fact allot of people think different about rats after seeing Ratatouille, but this is just another 101 dalmations/nemo/harry potter action: people seeing a movie, thinking: WOW! I need to have a dog/Fish/Owl or whatever. And petstores are gladly to sell this animals. The rats will be placed in to small cages, on there own and without things to stimulate there curiousity....Allot of them should be glad to end up in a good animalshelter. Earlier today I had an argument with a friend of my sister, they bought a rat as a birthday gift for there schoolteacher....the rat was alone, in a cardboard box en they came to me for food..I asked them if I could have him, because I told them it wasn't fair to do this to an animal. But they said no, And they're getting a rat for Sinterklaas(And no, that's not Santa ) So I told them they should get at least 2 rats, but they wouldn't listen :S.... I hate it when people don't know, or want to know anything about there pet. (Sorry for my bad writing, I'm a bit tired...it's late on the other side of the world )

^I get you ladyjosephine. I hate it when people don't listen and yeah if a shelter is being good to that animal, than it's better there than with a uncaring owner.
Also Eight Below had warnings about how Huskies need to have this and this owner (although I have to say two Malamutes were in the picture too).

A good shelter is surely better than a bad home. . . . but if people weren't so senseless, there'd be only rats in good homes. So tell us about Sinterklaas! We're glad to hear from you regardless of your writing proficiency at the time!

If that rat was saved from a snake, well, better alone and alive - so long as he/she gets lots of attention from the human. BTW, some of my male rats have been escaping, wandering around, and then returning home as they please. How are they escaping?? They are squeezing through a square opening in a metal grate just under 1.5 inches wide! These guys are not small, and about a third bigger than their sisters. You will recall when they were born. Their birthday is coming up very soon - the thread is still up in the Rats forum.
