Gareth, yes, that 's nice.
Sorry for your loss, DF.
One of these days I too will lose a hamster without explanation. I've been lucky to have had mine to date live to a ripe old age (3.5 and 4). One might argue that watching the decline isn't so great, but the most significant part of that occurred over a period of a week, not months.

Looks like the Chinese live a little longer than other Dwarf varieties and Syrians? 4 years?! That's fantastic! Although, my very first Syrian, Duffy, lived to be 4 years old or maybe even more. Poor old guy. I poked him gently one morning when I was about 11 (I got him when I was 7), and he just didn't wake up He was a gorgeous red-eyed cream teddy bear. (If I remember correctly!) I still miss him, he was very sweet. Pinky, I'm glad you like the name Gareth too. I hope DF does. Meaning "gentle" I think it's a very suiting name for one of his Dwarfs. PS - I'm glad your hamsters' decline was not long, Pinky. It's sad to watch animals suffering in their old age. That is why we had my Shih tzu put to sleep. She was blind, and deaf, was afraid to go outside, had very irritated skin problems, and wouldn't even wag her tail anymore. We knew she just wasn't happy I cried for days.

I think the oldest Syrian I had was the beloved Princess, whose story is up. Rescued at age two, I had her six months.
As I've said before, I was far more uoset when she died of a stroke in my hands than when my father died. And that says alot about both of them.
Lingering illnesses. See the stories of Syrians Rainy (apparent brain cancer or such) and Makeeda (Cushing's Disease). Very bad, and unusual.

Oh crap. Shades of Rasputin. . . I am so zoncked out by my pollen allergies (worst in years) I accidentally edited Megs above post instead of replying to it!! Megs, sorry, add what I removed. . . >> Awww, I'm so sorry to hear that. Seems that Dwarfs tend to pass sooner than Syrians do. So sad. Even my little Molly (my last Dwarf, a lovely opal platinum) only made it about 18 months. Poor little fellow. I wonder what was wrong. Yes, let's give him a name. Let's call him Gareth. It means "gentle," since all your Dwarfs are so tame and friendly Again I'm so sorry for your loss. RIP Gareth. Always loved, never forgotten.<< Thanks. Gareth it is/was. He gets buried with a name. I will photo him beforehand. Some of you know I do volunteer work at lovely Green-Wood Cemetery here in Brooklyn, NY. In going over the big old registry of burials books from 130+ years ago you find many references to "baby of" such and such a person - still borns and infants who died before baptism were buried with no name. Thankfully, that practice ended long ago.

Whoopsie! Gareth is probably laughing at you Yes, I'm glad we gave him a name. No matter how brief their time here, they deserve to be laid to rest with a name to remember them by. Boooo. Allergies. I've noticed mine acting up to. Very bad, itching, watering eyes, especially when the wind blows. When I get on the bus, it looks like I'm crying!

This is the worst it has been this time of year in many many years. The tree pollen is also 11-13 days ahead of schedule owing to the mild Winter. Perhaps it also caused MORE pollen than normal. To the Bronx, and the NY Botanic Gardens Wednesday! I will bring tissues.

^^^ Good call about the tissues. I am going to make a trip to the park on the weekend or early next week so I can take some pictures and enjoy the outdoors after this long haul of exam studying and writing is over. It will all be over 10pm Thursday night. Then sleep, then work, then I can finally have some leisure time. Saw a grey squirrel on the fence next to my building last night. Very cute. Didn't have the camera, but I'll be taking it on a picture taking excursion soon.

You've seen the squirrels in the Squirrel Forum?
I am off now to process today's Brooklyn Botanic Garden photos. Can't post them for awhile as Picturetrail is down.

Sounds like things are looking up around here if we have too many posts for you to read! ;D Even if it's only a handful of us, it's all interesting stuff, and I'm enjoying the forum very much. Alot less immaturity here than what's going on around another forum these days. I must say though, that the Mod there has been doing a pretty good job lately. Locking useless threads etc. Telling people to smarten up. I think within time though, we will have alot more members here, since this forum is about rodents and not just hamsters. Just a note, I've tried to make an account on Paw-talk, TWICE. They've shot me down both times. I wrote them, telling them I was using my ISP email address (not a "free" email account) and they will not respond. Hrmph. Fine then.

What name did you use at Paw-Talk? Give me info and I will write them myself.
Keep posting links to this place when you can, or doing whatever to try to get more members.

I used Megs, which did not appear to be taken. I also added your name in the "referred by" field. I'll PM you the email address I was using. The first time, my activation link didn't work, and I didn't realize that I hadn't activated the account properly. So I wrote them back telling them that was likely the problem and was my mistake. I attempted to re-register, this time following the activation code procedure correctly. Well they denied me again! With no follow up. Frustrating.
