To cut a long story short, I rescued a rabbit and a guinea pig from a tiny cage where they were lying in their own wee with no bedding or water and only a scrap of mangy cabbage to eat.
They're both with me now in the bathroom (the only place where I can pen them in so they'll be safe!), washed and tidied up a little because they both stank to high heaven.
What should I feed the guinea pig? He's attacked a piece of tomato with so much gusto it makes you think he's never eaten before; in fact, everything I've put down in front of him he's scoffed. He's eaten hay, tomato and parsley - is there anything else I can give him?

Well, DF is really the guinea pig guy. But... I do know that guinea pigs LOVE spinach. I think they can also eat some fruits, like apples and many other veggies.... such as carrots, cucumber.. probably lots of other stuff is perfectly safe and well enjoyed by the piggies. As for protein.... I'm sure they'll need a source of some kind if you can't get commerical guinea pig pellets. DF would answer this best. He'll be around soon Oh, by the way, congratulations on your rescue! Always nice to hear that two more animals have found a safe, happy home.

Hi Hollie !!
You are the new Bunny Piggie savior !!! Good for you!!
Also you guessed REAL well with the piggy, Tomatoes are good for them in Moderation, they do have a lot of citric acid, but are definitely on the menu from a site a friend of mine sent me to who has rescued many a piggie & now 4 Bunnies as well......It is called " GuineaLynx ", I believe....I will see if I can find it for you & Post it, although I may not be able to do this today, I will try my best however.
In this site they give you a GREAT Table of different fruits & Veggies that are GREAT for Piggies.....The little buggers can eat LOTS of greens & veggies, BUT you have to watch out I believe for phosforus vs Calcium levels & such....the Table of Veggies in GuineaLynx is greatly helpful. Also the site has great info on Feeding and such for Piggies....Some fruits & Veggies may be MUCH better than others for Piggies, such as Carrots which they LOVE, these have a lot of Sugar in them & need to also be given in Moderation.
You also want to get Piggie some Pellets specific for Guinea Pigs as they require extra Vitamin C....Otherwise they can get "scurvy"...like the sailors did many many years ago before they could take Orange juice on a Ship LOL!!!!
Hay of course is great for both animals. I donĀ“t believe they can eat too much of it either.
I will see about finding the web address for you!!
AWESOME work on your part !!
" Applause" to you!!!

leafy greens are best for piggies, romaine lettuce parsley and such. Fruit in moderation they need a plain pellet that contains vitamin c stay away from the stuff with seeds and what looks like kids sugary cereal in it its absolute junk. Glad you saved them remember though to be safe the bunny and piggie need seperate cages, the bunnies hind legs and claws are strong and when the bunny hops it can injure the pig very easily. not to mention my female rabbit gets....amorus at times with things and the poor piggy once those hormone kick in! Good job taking them in...oh and try to stay away from cabbage too gassy for thier digestive system.

Welcome to the forum! I do not know your location so I really can't help other than suggest you go into the Animal Rescues forum and look around. I do advise you to call the rescue group I mentioned for NYC - www.scarnyc.org - whose number is on their site. They have rescued many GPs (and I have two), and they can advise you of other possible places you can contact. Ask for Susan. Also contact: www.cavyrescue.comYou can also Search on the web for local GP rescues (again, I do not know where you live) and call them as they surely know of other rescue groups in different locations.

Thats so great that you would rescue those guys , too many people buying from pet stores if you ask me. Make sure the cavy has timothy hay at all times, and make sure the cage is rodent safe and theres nothing that could come loose or they could fall off of.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the good wishes, but do you know this story is almost two years old?
New rule: please do not bump very old threads. Thanks.
