Ha...never seen that before! You know how kangaroo's do that kick boxing thing & they move their forearms too, maybe these chipmunks are just telling each other to back off you think?! Btw...they look a lot like squirrles, are you sure their chipmunks?

I've shown that photo to a lot of people and no one thought they were squirrels. I can't be sure but the markings and general smallness and delicacy of the features suggests chipmunks, as does the shorter tail.
'Roos kicking each other is really aggressive stuff. All business.

Huh? Where do you live? Maybe our chipmunks look different from each other. Cause they don't look like chipmunks I've seen here.
Yeah, kangaroos can really fight that out. Hate to be the one who loses!

I guess "southern NJ" has different looking chipmunks or squirrels, as I never have seen a squirrel around here (NYC) that looks anything like that. I never saw a squirrel with stripes, either. Maybe there is a chipmunk website. . . HA! I just punched up www.chipmunks.com, but got the ever-grating Alvin! Check it out. Try this: www.stemnet.nf.ca/CITE/chipmunk.htm

There you go! The bottom one looks like our chipmunks. Yeah, our squirrels don't have the stripes either, but our chipmunks are very small, brown, tads of white, & basically what you're pic looks like. There are no squirrels in NYC? Maybe of too much traffic?
Oh, brother...I think I only watched that show twice, you? The other site is nice.

There are squirrels in NYC, just not small and striped. They tend to be larger and rounder.

>> I never have seen a squirrel around here (NYC) that looks anything like that. I never saw a squirrel with stripes, either. << I said, I have never seen a squirrel that looks like the two critters in the first photo above ( who seem to be "fighting" ); that is likely because they ARE chipmunks. Obviously there are squirrels throughout NYC; they are ubiquitous. I have posted plenty of photos of them! BTW, feel free to feed your squirrels right now. It is a tough Winter out there.

Sorry I read you wrong. Yes, I know squirrels must be in NYC, I'm just saying maybe you guys didn't see them much because of the traffic. Yes, I feed the squirrels everyday (with bread & the rest of the hammie food that Sophie won't eat-they love it too!).

It's true that you don't see them near the roads too often - mostly just parks and backyards. There's one that lives near me that loves to antagonize the cats. He's figured out he's safe as long as the window is closed. He'll just hang out on the fire escape when he sees one of the cats in the window. I half expect to see him stick his tongue out at them.

Lol calvinator1, that's funny! Our squirrels are scared of us & won't come that close to the patio unless food is about.
*BTW...I know this is off topic, but I was just wondering Die Fledermaus is that a Fruit Bat on your signature? I don't think its a Vampire Bat, but I don't know the species of bats around; only heard of maybe three.*

Don't feed them too much when food is plentiful such as in November, or maybe late Spring; if you do you can create an artificially large population dependent on you for handouts. That happened at City Hall Park in NYC where some woman was nice enough to feed them everyday she was there - but when she retired, that was it. Some of us help as much as we can, but I fear many died for lack of food. There are still plenty there though, and a cool trick to show friends is to go to the Brooklyn Bridge side of the park and start knocking two walnuts together. Where there were no squirrels at all very soon a dozen will come charging over to you for nuts! Most can be hand fed.

Ah, okay, I've never heard of that kind of bat. Well, you learn something new everyday.
Well, I live in a townhouse where lots of people live near us, so they feed the squirrels too (I'm not sure everday), but I know they feed them b/c the squirrels go over there to feed. Yeah, I can see your point though (they don't come out much during the winter anyway-I think its the birds that get there first..lol).
