What I had to do was stand motionless like a tree for ten minutes unti l the little guy came out from where I spotted him dart into and hide. It took a lot of time and patience to get those shots.

I take it your weren't using a flash - or did he/she not notice? I hate to admit it, but I haven't seen any chipmunks in the city. Clearly I haven't been looking in the right places.

No flash; it would have scared them and the flash would have been a little too far away - more than 8 feet and you're wasting your time. That guy might have been three yards away. Ever see at out arena events, sports or concerts, people using flash from 50 yards or more away? A total waste of time. I once was riding on the Staten Island ferry late one night back to Manhattan, and it was a lovely sight (pre-9/11). Tourists were taking flash photos (again, at night) of the skyline from over a mile away; they'd have needed a slash the size of an SUV to be effective! I have never seen a chipmunk in any borough other than the Bronx, which, you'll recall, is landlocked and not an island. Maybe that makes it easier for chipmunks to get there (?).

Just a quick note. . . a few days ago I, for the very first time, spotted a chipmunk in Brooklyn! In Prospect Park! I had never seen one in Brooklyn or Manhattan. They are very very skittish.

2 years ago I saw my first chipmunk! We were are Grant's Farm up in St. Louis. What a thrill for me, I had no idea they were so tiny, always thought they were the size of squirrels.
Also saw my first red fox, prairie dogs and skunks, at the Reavis Barracks and National Cemetary in St Louis. Oh i have smelled skunk.....but never had seen one before.
The little fox was so cute. We had just pulled up to park and we saw him. He was on the other side of the fence, he saw our car and ran back and forth until he found a way around to come to this side. Then he sat there for 20 minutes just watching us. We were the attraction not him LOL

One night in a large park here in the residential but urban confines of my Brooklyn neighborhood I was out leaving nuts for squirrels. On rare occasions one is up, even at night. Insomnia, I suppose. I spotted one in the dark in a tree. When I got closer to leave some filberts I thought it looked strangely huge. On closer inspection. . . it was a raccoon.

Wow, a Raccoon, that's neat!! My brother & Dad in Cape Cod saw a Skunk & when I was walking home at night (which I got in trouble for b/c I was much younger) I saw an Opposum.

The most interesting animal I saw was the hawk I spotted at Green-Wood Cemetery about two weeks ago. See the thread I started on that, with photos, in the Members Only forum. I also saw egrets and herons and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the lovely green Monk Parakeet's also at Green-Wood Cemetery. The have their own site: www.monkparakeet.com/They live in the landmark spires of the main gate.

Aww, those are adorable Chipmunks. My Chihuahua recently caught one and gave it to me as a present. =( Poor little Chippy. There are wild Parakeets in NY?
