I have posted photos some time ago of the City Hall Park squirrels here in New York City. The problem with the area is that too many of the trees are London Planes - poor for squirrels in terms of shelter. So some folks have gotten permission to install wooden boxes as hideouts/homes for the squirrels. What is also good about this is it confirms to me that some good folks are keeping an eye on the squirrels there and helping them out.

Yes, this is a good thing! I like squirrels despite their attempted raids on my bird feeder. I get upset when my landlord traps them and releases them elsewhere, but there isn't much I can do about that.

At least he releases them!
I have to remember there are some squirrels in several big trees in the backyard. I should toss them some filberts.
As for City Hall Park, it is good many people are watching. years ago I once actually saw them lure a squirrel with an overgrown incisor into a carrier to be taken to a vet. otherwise he would surely have died. The Parks Dept. would only have him put down, if they did anything at all.
