I have removed the wire floor since I took the pictures. I had to wait until I got some new wire cutters. All out now though.
Tom, rat proofing is pretty easy, I find the JML 'Zip Clip' is a great way to protect cables from ratties.
There life span is actually longer than a hamster on average, usually its around 3 years for a rat. The female rat are prone to mammary tumours, other than that there pretty free from illness

Well as promised heres some pictures of my two new Eepers Toejam and Earl! Earl and Toejam being nosey How cute are those little faces? Earl decided weather or not to come onto my hand He decided I was fine to walk on! Training to be a tightrope walker Earl? Toejam was a little camera shy! So what do you think? Have I got your approval? As for the introductions to Bart, I have started letting them play on a neutral area (My bed) so they can get used to each other slowly. So far it seems to be going well Kane

Well I have picked up the two new eepers and have named them Toejam And Earl. Luckily the lady who breeds the rats for the garden centre was there so I managed to get plenty of information on the two. Introductions are so far going well. Bart has been grooming them both for the last 5 minutes. No scuffles so far. One thing I am a little worried about, Toejam and Earl are so tiny compared to Bart but so far they have just been sniffing and washing each other. Toejam is the eeper sniffing my thumb, Earl is sat underneath him. Bart at this point was more interested in what my jeans smelt like (They are clean lol) I'm not to sure what colours they are as I never remember there names. I think they both have Berkshire in them (Though I'm probably wrong.) Kane

After loosing Homer, Bart has been seriously down in the dumps, He's been eating but thats about it. Bart is usually very boisterous and active and causing mischief. Now he doesn't move out of his Hammock. Well tomorrow I'm going up to the garden centre from where I brought Bart from to get him a new pal. With a little work I hope he will cheer up. I will be posting pictures up as soon as I can!

I'm afraid to say that Homer died last night. He died about 5.30am cuddled up in my hand. He did go peacefully.
It's such a shame, he was only 10 months old and had a character bigger than the world. He will be sadly missed.
I will try and get a new mate for Bart as I guess Homer's death will hit him hard as they were very close. It seems horrible thinking about trying to 'replace' Homer, but I have to for Bart.
RIP Homer

it saddens me to bring bad news.
Sometime overnight Homer has had a stroke, his right hand side has been badly damaged. I took him to the vets this morning who told me Homer doesn't have long to live, he would be surprised if he is still here tomorrow. The vet said Homer is in no pain so we elected to bring him home so he can pass away with his best friend by his side.
Bart knows there's something wrong, he keeps nudging Homer with his nose, I am worried for him on how this will affect him, Of coarse I will get him a mate when Homer passes on, Bart and Homer are both only 10 months old.
Are strokes common in rats? and what causes them? The vet wasn't much help as he usually deals with cats and dogs.

I believe they are siamese. There dad is a Burmese This is there dad Monty (Who I forgot to post before...Sorry Monty) There mom was white (PEW I think) she sadly died earlier this year. As for telling them apart, it's easy! They all have slightly different markings on there bellies. And yep 2 of them are spotted. Kane
