It seems hamsters (Syrians) are not too keen on using the wheel inside the Habitrail Space Station (or the Safari version). I don't know about the external wheel add on.
Do your hamsters (Syrians, or dwarfs) actually use the internal wheel? I feel it might be too small for some of them. I am worried this might have a bad effect on their health.

Puck always did without a problem, but he particularly loved the external wheel - the orbiting satelite. He spent many a happy moment in that wheel.
For the dwarfs, I always taped up the Habitrail wheel, because of the slits in it.

I don't know Puck's size, compared to mine. Prince used it, but he also went berserk climbing on the bars and gnawing, so I moved him to a bin.
Whatever did you do with that Habitrail after the mouse invasion? You could always put mesh over the bars either locking the mice out, or locking some fancy mice in.

Puck is a pretty small little guy - always has been. He loves the Habitrail. I just started using the Space Station as his evening amusement park. I figure that way the mice will not invade (if there are any) since I'll be up. Here he is, last night, visiting his second childhood: www.mschiefmakerhaven.com/SecondChildhood.AVI

All of mine love their Habitrail wheels. Of course at the moment the dwarfs have them. Lola loved hers. I can see how if they were on the larger side the bar in the middle might be too low and cause unneccessary bending in the back. On a side note for Dwarfs, Digweed adores his "Fly Wheel" that came with his habitrail mini.

I always kept those habitrail wheels for my dwarfs.
I just use a standard solid floor wheel as a replacement.

My hammie Indy is quite big and he loves his wheel - he had the habitrail safari cage and had no problem with the internal safari one and the exteral orbiting satalite which i added to the safari cage for a bit of variety - that's his favourite - AND he is a long haired hamster - so no problem... We have just changed cages to Rotastak and the wheel that comes with that - Nooooo way!!!! Removed it straight the way!! trapped his hair round the middle - not high enough!! such a small wheel! probably ideal for mice! - so I have added the orbiting satalite to my new rotastak cage and as I type he is going like the clappers!! wish it had a speedo on it but habitrail dont do that!! hehe! My one long hair Syrian, Prince, once got trapped by a Van Ness wheel that pulled his fur into the hub; I had ti cut him loose! Sometimes a Comfort Wheel seems prone to do that. But the Comfort Wheel he is using now is OK for him, as is the Twin Spin Wheel I attached to the wall of his bin.
A Syrian I recently rescued and put in the CritterTrail2 does use the internal wheel in that cage, but she is not that big. My two dwarfs can either use the Habitrail wheel or a small Comfort Wheel.

I have several Habitrail and Crittertail cages. My medium sized hams love the habitrail wheels. Though the pin in the middle eventually wears, especially if a long haired ham is getting his hair caught in it. I had one little guy pull it down on top of himself, and I found him travelling the cage underneath the wheel in the morning! Quite a funny site actually! I have a few orbiting satellites, this is what I use for the longhaired males. They don't get their hair caught in it, but again, these are my medium size hams. The big guys need the 8 1/2 inch comfort wheels. In the Crittertrail 2, I take the original wheel out, which is already smallet than the habitrail wheel and use the comfort wheel. I have attached the extra crittertrail wheels to bins for the young ones that can still use them, so they don't go to waste!

Right now it is not an issue for me as my two Habitrail SS's with addons each have a dwarf in them, And they use the wheels. In fact, I just cleaned one after a month, and the dwarf made more more of a potty mess then I expected from such a small critter. it was the first time i cleaned it after outting the dwarf in their in July. That was Snowball's place.
The dwarfs remain calmer and more docile than people led me to expect. I also am convinced it is best for them to live alone - safer.
