I had an uncle pass away recently, so I am late on keeping up on my rodent requiems. . . Bouds passed away quietly in the white tissue bedding of her Habitrail outpost on June 29th, 2004. She was born as part of Rainy's litter on January 9th, 2003. Boudicca was always somewhat reclusive, and gradually became more so. She had been living in a Habitrail Space Station for almost a year, usually in the explorer. I took her out and looked her over on June 27th, and she seemed OK - no symptoms or abnormalities of any kind. She foraged in a bin, and stashed her food, albeit not too vigorously, but she was 1.5 years old. She then seemed to be sleeping too much, and next check she was gone, thankfully peacefully and with no apparent discomfort. She joins her mom, Rainy, and siblings, Larry, Peter, Ringy, and Onyx, in hamster heaven. Her other siblings, Zeb, Theodora, Hypatia, Raven, Ebony, Makeeda, and Zenobia, seem healthy and happy, as does her nephew, Stanley, and niece, Blanche. All will be buried deep together in the same place, in G-W cemetery. (I have to get a trowel!). Taken last September: Good-by, Boudicca. I have concerns about the Habitrail, which I will post in another thread.

What a shame. I'm sorry to hear it. I remember her - she was my favorite of yours - I love her coat.
Which one is the mother of Stanley and Blanche? I can't keep all your hammies straight...

Yes, you liked the fact Bouds "did her own thing", but she ended up just being reclusive. I wonder if she could have used the wheel more (or at all), and if that had a health effect on her for the worse. She rarely came out when I was there with the lights on, unlike such as Zenobia or Raven who hop up and down like little dogs when they see me wanting to be taken out.
Makeeda is the mother. She is in the other Habitrail, and is very reserved, but apparently healthy. She never gnaws the bars. I have no idea why not. she also never goes into the observatory unless I leave a peanut up there. Jerry the dwarf is in Boudicca's old place, and he lives in some long cul-de-sac tubes more than in one of the add ons. There is a small Comfort Wheel in there along with the SS wheel.
The remaining "panda bears" are Theodora, Hypatia, and Zenobia.
There was a TV movie on cable some months ago on the real Boudicca.

Puck is that way - if the lights are on, he sleeps. When I turn them off, he gets up. I don't think it necessarily means something is seriously wrong.
I also thought Boudicca was especially pretty.
Puck has never gnawed the bars of the Space Station either. I guess different hamsters have different personalities.
When do you plan on burying everybody?

Boudicca's back pattern was likely the nicest. Zenobia's is sort of solid, and the others have one spot of varying size. Peter actually had a very nice pattern, for the 2.5 months he lived. If I find a photo I'll post it, later. As soon as I find a good inexpensive trowel in Odd Lot I will scope out the location near secluded Dell Water in G-W. The problem with burying under trees is the roots. . . Princess may be staying, although unlike the frozen Ted Williams her head is attached. All before the end of Summer.

Here they are late in January of 2003. Boudicca, Peter, Zenobia, from left to right. Those are the "panda bears". I can't ID the black ones, of course.

Those were the days. What cuties they were! Time sure flies by for these little ones...

Thanks. Haven't had an animal yet suffer - except of course for poor Rainy. Let me add. . . Boudicca never showed that bit of red liquid on the nose that Onyx and Ringy, her sisters did. They passed away peacefully too. So I assume it was a different cause (?). Wish I knew what it was. . . A pet store manager once suggested doing autopsies on deceased animals! Better I don't know than do that.
