I never knew exactly how old Cole was. He was bigger than Dusty and Sandy when I adoped the three of them, and I was never sure whether he was their father or brother.
Cole sired fifteen pups by Vodra over the Spring and Summer of 2003, and is survived by twelve of them. He lived with his sons Odin and Leto from their fifth week of age to his passing.
Cole's cause of death is unknown. He was in great health Sunday afternoon when I visited with him. He had no apparent injuries and appeared to have died peacefully.
Cole was much loved by all who met him, and never quarreled with other gerbils.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that Cole has left. I'm glad though that it was sudden and peaceful. Did he leave behind any tankmates? I can't remember who is paired with whom in your clan...

It is frustrating, but I suspect this will be a sad year for me -- so many gerbils will be reaching seniority this year... Well, I cannot see the sixteen gerbils still resident here still toodling along at year's end.
Cole left Odin and Leto behind. They seem not affected mostly by his passing. More sedate maybe, but certainly active and healthy seeming.
Without having witnessed it, I hope it is a good thing to wish for my own end, decades from now perhaps, to be as peaceful and dignified as Cole's may have been.
It's all I want for my companions -- to find life and its passing as dignified, joyful, meaningful, and whole as I would wish for myself.

I've lost 8 since last April, and am left with only one of the original 9. I'm relieved to only have one currently in the danger zone (Pleiades who will be 2 years and 4 months in early March). I am hoping that her new boyfriend will give her reason to stick around a while. You will make it through this time - it really helps to know that they had a great life, which I'm sure they did under your care. 16 is a lot still - you are still surrounded by quite a bit of life
