I am so well known at some local pet stores they know I will rescue any abandoned hamsters they get. So, Saturday I went in one and two Syrians were crammed into a small cage suitable (maybe) for only one dwarf; worse, the wheel was runged, and worse still, the bedding was all dangerous cedar! The hams smelled like a clothing closet. They are both males, and both brothers, I am told. it is sad to separate them as they seemed to be getting along so very well, but we all know not doing so is potentially dangerous in the future. I picked them up Sunday and moved them to more suitable quarters. Here are the photos after I first brought them home: I am still working on thinking up names. One is in a big plastic Crittertail, the kind without the bars, and with a long vertical tube leading to a red "outpost" thing. Hope he figures it out soon.

You mean a CT Classic? I used those for my dwarfs.
That's great that you rescued them & they're both very cute! So...how many hamsters do you have now?

Why would you put a dwarf in that thing? Yes, it is a Crittertrail Classic, and a dwarf could climb up that big vertical tube??
The outpost thing was a pain as all the bedding got kicked out, so I got an elbow joint and now it is at a 90 degree angle, the top facing me. The last ham in there nested comfortably, the bedding staying where it was.
I named the darker one Cocoa, in tribute to Chocolate, a previous rescue ham, now deceased. But she had shorter fur.
I have eight Syrians and four dwarfs.

Don't you think a CT Classic is a bit too small for a syrian? I'm not questioning your motive cause I know you're a good hamster owner, I'm just curious.
It was perfect for our dwarves; at the time when Benny & Theo were friendly with each other, we had them connected with tubing & all. Yes, they could climb up the tubes into their attic. I used it for all three of mine & they all were fine in it. You should've seen Benny...she would bite on the tube & half her body was in the tube biting & half of her body was out of the tube going up & down as she bite. Hilarious! ;D
Aww...Cocoa is a cute name. What did you name the other one?

Malu.
A dwarf can get up that big vertical tube? How can they do it?
Ideally I'd attach the CC to the CT2, which Cinnamon is in. But this is not an ideal world, and Malu, the one in the CC, has about ten times more room (and now privacy) then he had previously.
"Malu" means "happiness" in Hawaiian.

Malu is a cute name. When I read it, it sounded Hawaiian too. I like when people pick out names that mean different things in different languages. I may be getting a seramic dog for Christmas and I'm naming her Aziza which means "friend" in some African language. I never knew about the other CT's or else Benny, Theo, and Harriet would've had longer & bigger cages even though we had tubes on for them. The dwarfs got up the tubes just fine, it was in their size. Here is a little picture of what it looked like: RIGHT HEREMaybe yours is called a Classic, but it's not the same one. We had our dwarfs in 1999-2001, so they might've changed the image of the Classic.

One day I will have to try some dwarfs in there to see if they can climb up. I'd be worried about them climbing down and falling though. Should I be??

I'm still learning how to do that, I'm afraid I'll mess up. Don't be worried. Our dwarfs were just fine making it up & down the tubes. I always thought the Classic would be too small for Sophie, so I got her the CT1 & CT2 put together. Now I find out I could've used it for her. Hmm.

My dwarf babies are squeaking under the Carefresh, hidden with their mom! I hope for the best. . .

Aww...I always thought dwarf babies were kinda cute, of course I never said that to Harriet! Don't want to hurt her feelings, My Mom and brother called them: Harriet and the seven dwarves. How many babies did your dwarf momma have?

Supposedly six. I carefully checked the nest today after moving the mom and aunt out and I saw four of equal size and one of smaller size. Maybe I missed one. But maybe I will end up with only four. They already have the typical Campbell line down the back.

So cute, but how could they have lived together in such a small cage!?!

Which ones? The Syrian brothers in the blue wired cage?
That was just plain cruel! Not on DF's part of course! That cage is too small for ONE Syrian, let alone two.
Being abandoned and falling into DF's care was the best thing for them.

So cute, but how could they have lived together in such a small cage!?! I don't know how long they were in there. But they seemed very calm together; I hated to separate them, but it is too risky not to with Syrians. They smelled like a clothes closet from the cedar! Malu is in a Critter Classic, and his brother Cocoa, in a Sterilite bin. Both are fine, but I don't think young as they don't move that much. Elderly?? That cage now has three small mice in it. And welcome to the forum!
