Just some photos here of the crew. Moet's four are 26 days old here; Chandon's fourteen (!) are 19 days old. When I put back a baby I played with the mom quickly grabs him/her with her forepaws violently spinning the baby on his/her back and sticking her nose in the fur in an almost threatening way. The baby squeaks loudly, and the mom gathers him/her into the nest. I don't know if this act is purely protective and possessive, or partially aggressive in case it is an invader. They clearly recognize everything by smell. The babies' fur is extremely soft.

They are SO CUTE! man so many cute little fuzzies all in one photo!I bet they keep super warm all snuggled together.
That's kind of weird about Mom's behaviour, but i don't know much about rats at all.

They have cute faces. I like the one picture where it looks like two of them are kissing each other.

All of this got me thinking about rats as snake food. See my latest thread in the Animal Rescues forum if interested in that debate.

They are more adorable in person. I bet. I love the pink ears and noses, they are just to adorable. When and if i get a rat (it won't be for a long while) I think I would like to adopt two female dwarf rats. When I went to the rat show, I fell in love with the dwarf rats, I also like the rex coat ones and the dumbos, they are so cute.

Oh GOSH, what CUTIES! I"m not sure about a mother/baby interaction, but that sounds like dominance behaviour you see in older rats...I'm assuming it's a similar thing here. L.

I go for the dark ones--maybe it's because I'm an agouti-hamster kind of person. But yes, what cute faces, particularly on the ones in the third picture looking over Mom's body!
So what is an adoptible age for rats? And where will they go? Do you have a friendly pet store who will take them from you? Will you keep any of the babies?

>> that sounds like dominance behaviour you see in older rats << Fair enough. At what age should I separate genders? Five weeks? I've said I am keeping Moet's four; the two males will be put together with two males from Chandon's litter, and the two females will stay with the mom, as might two of Chandon's bunch, depending on room. I plan to ty to adopt out one gender first--males. I have not sexed them yet but will do so soon. That will make it easier here in terms of housing; I will need to borrow the rabbit cage for awhile--Poppy the bun and her two GP friends can survive in the bathtub for a time. Basically, 8-10 of Chandon's are leaving, I hope, unfortunately. No room. Three are going to a trusted acquaintance and pet store worker as personal pets, and the 5-7 are going to that pet store they came from. I am convinced they will be sold as pets there; I have long experience with one guy (besides that female) who I know has long liked rats and wanted me to breed fancies. I told him straight up today I wouldn't trust him with gerbils but I do with rats. Of course, if I can get some adopted out through a reputable group, such as www.scarnyc.org, I can do that also. I think an adoptable age would be a month, but I would like or hope it would be a little longer as they are especially cute when younger; let them get more "rat-like" so buyers know what to expect, assuming they are not familiar with rats.

Actually, the bathtub for three years has contained an old three level rat cage I found abandoned, and which has been housing Poppy the bun and two GPs, now Sam and Lester. I usually take my showers at the gym.
It does get to be chore cleaning the tub, washing it. GPs, unlike the bun, are messy!
