Poor baby..i'm already falling in love with her. I had no choice but to take her and they didn't care. No food, no water,no toys, she was literally sitting in her own urine and feces, it was so deep it was pretty apparent they didn't clean the cage. I dumped it right way they stench was nauseating to say the least. I took pictures when i got home of the conditions, so all could see. the alfalfa in the before pic, i gave her. Her name is ASTRID Before After venus.walagata.com/w/dosergirl/000_0107.JPG

Nice job with the rescue. She seems healthy enough. Can she be handled and let out of the cage?? It is disgusting how some people treat animals. But then there is the rest of us. Keep us posted! Details, details!

This is really exciting for me too. This is the first time i've rescued an animal from the deplorable conditions another human being kept it in. I once found a kitten in a puddle but i don't think a person put it there. It makes me ashamed that another human would do that. anyway she's great now, flinging her self on her side, which means she's happy, she's playing with all her toys. she's great.

. . . It makes me ashamed that another human would do that. . . Yea. Makes me more disgusted, though. Again, good job by you.

. . .She isn't happy about being picked up but most rabbits aren't from what i understand. only time will tell really. i'm learning as i go I was told a rabbit is sometimes unhappy about being picked up out of their cage, they being territorial, but once outside they calm down and get sweet. (?). I have no idea if that is true in general or in your case. Saw your site: #114 and "the happy girl" are my favorites. I like # 122 also with that superior squint of hers. Did you have to clean her when you first got her, or do they clean themselves like gerbs and hams? I have no idea.

They clean themselves like gerbs and hams. as you can imagine her feet were filthy when i got her because there was no way she could keep them clean. But she looks great now.
As for the territorial thing, i read the same things. So i don't try to pick her up out of her cage and i don't try to put her in it. Cage=safe place not punishment. rabbits don't really like to be held at all for the most part(always exceptions) so i don't pick her up, i basically try to herd her around.

A lot of dogs seem to equate a cage with a safe place/den, and not punishment; it surely should never be used as punishment, although some dog trainers do not like any form of cage, even a really room one.
I was curious about holding them as I did see a few times in pet stores the worker gently holding a bun on its back in his arms. She semed most calm, although she gave an occasional leg thump!

Aw, what an awesome story. I visited the site and she seems happy. What a darling. I rescues Leah, my lop... she was sitting in a cage possibly 2 1/2 by the same, with thirty rabbits all 4 weeks old, and there was not enough room for all of them to stand on the floor so they had to stand on each other. She was the runt, so she was on the bottom. They were in full sun and had been for hours, with no water or shade. I debated for a moment whether I should support the guy with $5 and bring the bun home, and maybe I shouldn't have, but I did. Leah had to be washed, she was covered in feces and urine, and tiny from bad nutrition, and now she's huge and fluffy and man, has she got an attitude. How did you build the condo?
