Yes, I think a full grown Syrian could get through 2cm spacings between bars. Probably quite easily. If a hamster can get its head through, its body is a cinch. Hamsters are able to completely flatten themselves out.
I think bar spacing for hamsters should be a maximum of 1cm.

If you can't find something and are on a budget, then storage tubs converted into cages work awesome! Doesn't have to be anything too fancy. As long as you can hang a bottle within reach of your hamster and provide enough air holes, converted storage tubs are inexpensive and very functional.
There should be some pictures of tub-type cages in the habitats forum, if you want to check them out.

>> if a hamster can get its head through. . . <<
. . . the body follows easily.
And I think that is true with all rodents.

BTW, if the storage bin is deep enough, too deep to escape, and you don't put too much stuff in, you don't even need a top, unless you want to put it partially over one part of the bin where the ham sleeps so he can feel safer.
Thirty gallon Sterilite bins work for me.

Fine, so long as he doesn't start gnawing like crazy on the bars. Some people find that annoying.

Some gnaw like crazy, and some don't. Of course the more of you they see and hear they more agitated they can get wanting to get out, you know. They gnaw less in a dark quiet place.
