Wow, they must love living in there! And thank you for teaching me something new; I always thought degus were solitary. But I see by your pics that they are social creatures.

How big are they exactly? As big as a squirrel? Your names are cute for them. Basically what are they like? I've never seen one before.
Oh & btw...welcome to RR!

ty from the end of thier tail to thier head they are about 28cms long (just measured chocolate). pretty much they are very active and have squirrel characteristics. they love jumping around thier cage as in the wild they are rock hoppers. they also love to hide thier food around thier cage.thier very curious animals and very intellegent... give them enough time and they can figure pretty much anything out

Are they easy to tame and handle--or are they more meant to be watched in a cage? Welcome!

they love to come out of thier cage and explore. they dont like to be pet but love to run all over your arms as they dont stay still for long. they are quite unlike any other pet . i try to take mine out for atleast an hour a day, they really enjoy being out of thier cage. ive only been bit once by chocolate but he was scared and was when i first took him in so its understandeable. ty

See degus.org They have a great idea for a big aquarium tank with a homemade topper. But I hate carpentry!! I've seen degus many times at the Bronx Zoo. Very social, and kind of rude! One was sitting at the top of a big branch (they LOVE to climb) and another climbed right up and pushed the first one off! I guess they are twice of the size of a big fat Syrian hamster?

indeed thats one of the better sites. i like thier idea for the cage. i went the route of a full fiber glass cage because of the mess issue.
lol ya ive seen my guys do that before... they fall off but oh well, they've gotta learn somehow
ya they are about twice the size of a syrian hamster. think i might even get a hampster soon, have a rabbit cage that isnt being used so i guess we'll have to see.

That is a GREAT cage! what a fantastic setup. I will have degu's 'one day', i've been saying that for 4 years now LOL.... To me I think they are kind of like a gerbil and a dog, b/c of their entertaining and social personalities. My friend had a little female and she would talk to you, but once you walked away from the cage she would start yelling at you, so you'd come back and she would again talk to you with cute little noises, but each time u walked away she'd start yelling again LOL

BTW, I have never seen a degu for sale in a pet store. One acquaintance promised me a pair once from a school but he never delivered. And right now I do not have room.
I saw those degus at the Mouse House at the Bronx Zoo which is loaded with various rodents, such as the elegant acouchi.
